From the Year 6 Classroom

From Jane, Year 6 teacher

This term Year 6 has been exploring different cultural perspectives and roles in Australian society.

Together we reflected over:

  1. something the students have already learned
  2. something the students thought was important or
  3. something the students found interesting about the cultures we have looked at thus far.

They then used quotes, symbols, and images to create a 'quilt square' that acknowledges our diverse community. The following is written by Josie and Ivy all about the task.

Good afternoon students, parents and teachers of NMPS.

These few weeks, Year 6 have been doing a unit in Humanities, involving culture and traditions of the world. Students have been focusing on China, India, South Africa, and Aboriginal Australians. We chose our own countries like Poland in terms on food.

Looking 'into the shoes of how people felt', asking those 'awkward questions' and receiving honest answers on how people adapt, live and how this topic is presented in the media. Influencing an image in your brain that thinks the country isn't good enough or doesn't have enough supplies or money.

The Year 6 cohort has been focusing on different cultures and we've created a colourful quilt, representing what we've learnt in this unit. This is on display in the Year 6 Hive and Comms so that we have an amazing masterpieces hung up on the walls that everyone can look and be dazzled.

Wrapping all this up Year 6 has enjoyed this unit learning about different life experiences that people go through, creating art, collecting facts and gaining perspective about walking into other people's shoes.

On behalf of the year 6 cohort we hope you have a wonderful day and keep safe during this pandemic.
Kind regards, Josie and Ivy from year 6.
