Chinese Reading Competition Second Place Winner
Raksa Lim (9A)
Our own Raksa Lim won second place in this year's CLTAV Chinese Reading Award!
The reading award was held Friday, September 10 online via Zoom meeting. There were 80 participants coming from 27 secondary colleges around Melbourne. It was quite competitive!
We had Anha Dechah, Thanh Nguyen and Raksa Lim competing and their performances on that day were all amazing! Their positive attitude to take up a challenge and give it a go is worth celebrating!
Well done Anha, Thanh and Raksa! Proud of you guys!

Science Week 2021
The theme for this year’s science week was “Food: different by design”! We had a variety of lunch-time activities such as preparing and testing purple cabbage indicators on different food types, crickets/meal worm tasting, vegan sausage rolls, making herb pots and corn tasting. Initially, some of our students & staff were apprehensive at the bug tasting but eventually gave it a go. The overall verdict was “this doesn’t taste too bad!” During science lessons, students tried potato and corn chips and discussed the issues involved with genetically modified food.
A big THANK YOU to our amazing Laboratory technician Ms Jennifer Phillips for organising all the food for science week and our wonderful science team for helping with the activities.

Literacy Week
At the end of Term 3 we celebrated Literacy Week at Westall. Student leaders and staff hosted a wide variety of online activities, competitions and workshops that highlightedthe value, importance and fun of reading and writing.
We hosted a daily anagram challenged based on jargon from each of the domains, had students create their own six-word stories and write poems, and had fun pronouncing challenging words!
Thank you to all the students and staff who got involved and had some fun. We’ve included the winning six-word stories and poems below!

POEMS
Slowly, my work piles up. |
Slowly, the time was up. |
Slowly, the night falls. |
Slowly, the sun is tall. |
Slowly, my class starts. |
Slowly, I fall asleep with the mumble of my heart. |
Monineath Seang, Year 10
Once more I would like to visit my childhood, |
Once more I would like to relive my memories, |
Once more I would like to be in my mothers arm, |
Once more I would like to play with my father, |
Once more I would like to be a kid in horizon, |
Once more I would like to dream these dreams, even though I know that it is just a dream. |
Joe Bonnyjose, Year 10
Sadly, I’m all alone. |
Sadly, my happiness is blown. |
Sadly, you left me here. |
Sadly, I shed many tears. |
Sadly, I will live with this despair. |
Sadly, life is so unfair. |

In2Science School Engagement Nominee for 2021
We had the opportunity this year to have In2Science mentors from Swinburne University to inspire and support our students from Year 7-10, in Maths and Science as well as the electives. Many of our Maths and Science classes received additional support from our mentors, and our students had the opportunity to ask questions about the mentor’s past and present educational experience, as well as life experience. The relationships that developed between the mentors and students has been fulfilling. It is an honour for Westall Secondary College to be nominated for the In2Science School Engagement award for 2021!
