Year 3

Writing:

So far in Term 4, students have been exploring a range of poetic genres. They have been writing Concrete, Diamante and Quatrain poems using each of their certain structures, including use of rhyme and rhythm. By writing these poems, the Year 3s are working towards the development of their own collection of poems.

The Harry Potter diamante is "poeted" by Phoenix M 3C

The cat shape poem was "poeted" by Tiffany Z 3D

Reading:

In Reading this term, our Year 3 students are learning to make inferences about themes, messages and identifying what has been implied when decoding figurative language throughout poetry. To infer what the author/poet means but has not said, requires students to make an educated guess with the support of prior knowledge and text clues. Our students have been learning to read poems using rhythm, tone, pace and pitch to build on their speaking and listening skills. You can continue to practice inferring at home by reading a range of texts. Make sure to stop occasionally and infer the author’s meaning and choose two details to support your thinking!

Check out some of our fantastic inferring work so far:

Jamila E-N, 3C, Inferring the theme in poems.

Tiffany Z, 3D, Inferring the mood in a poem.

Maths:

The last few weeks in Mathematics have been lots of fun. We have been learning about place value, time and problem solving. Here are some samples of what we have been learning about.

Term Overview

What’s been happening in Grade 4

The Grade 4 students have settled in nicely to term 4 and are nice and eager to begin learning for the term. It has been a pleasure to have them all back on our screens after a nice and restful two weeks of holidays.

To begin the term off we have introduced students into our new units for the term.

For reading, we are starting to explore different types of poetry and how they are read. Students have been experimenting with a range of techniques to perform poems and aim to engage and entertain an audience.

In Writing, students are learning to understand the different structures of poetry and the elements they include. Students are experimenting with poetry by writing their own poems and are getting creative by implementing a range of techniques

For Maths, students have started their fraction unit. Students are beginning to understand the vocabulary used for fractions when answering worded problems and challenge questions. Students have been able to locate fractions on a number line and add or subtract fractions with like denominators.

The Grade 4 teachers are very much looking forward to seeing the students back onsite next week.

Year 5

Reading

Throughout remote learning the grade 5’s have started reading their class text ‘Loyal Creatures’.  The students have done an exceptional job at diving deep into the text and analysing different themes such as Loyalty, War, relationships, family, courage and sacrifice. They have been practising the skill of ‘synthesising’ to see how their knowledge and thoughts have changed in regards to different themes.

Here is an example of Wilson L from 5C’s response:

Writing

In writing the students have been learning about important events in history to prepare themselves for writing their own historical narrative. Events such as Titanic, Man landing on the Moon and the eruption of Pompeii. Students are now in the process of completing their drafting process and making a start on publishing their historical narrative based on a chosen historical event that interested them. Some of the topics students have chosen to write on are: Anne Frank, Nazi Germany, WW2, Man landing on the moon (from a female astronaut’s perspective). The students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about these historic events.

Maths

Students have finished up learning about Angles and have now moved onto looking at the addition and subtraction of Fractions and Decimals Operations.  They have been revising what they already know about fractions and decimals before moving towards to process for how they add and subtract them.

In Reading, students have been exploring different types of poetry and learning about the larger theme/message that the poem is conveying to an audience-some of these themes have been worldly themes that affect humans around the world- such as Covid, Human Rights, Racism.

Students have also been analysing the different types of figurative language used in poems-such as personification, similes, metaphors, alliteration and onomatopoeia and how these features can enhance a poem.

Students are now looking at symbolism within poetry and songs and how different symbols can hold different meanings and portray different messages to the audience.

In Writing students are also looking at poetry! They have enjoyed applying the knowledge they have learnt from reading into the construction of their own Haiku poems!

Here are some examples of Haiku poems written by the students following the 5,7,5 syllable rule structure:

Peaceful sounds of the ocean

Orchestra of sounds

The ocean is my happy place

To feel joy and calm

By Brooklynn D C

Space

space, it never ends

8(eighth) planets in space

Boom, crash! Asteroids

By Josh H

The earth polluted

The wars started during time

The virus began

By Mika J

In Maths students have had fun at home exploring efficient ways of finding volume and capacity of rectangular prisms and cubes. They will then learn to calculate the volume using familiar metric units.

Year 6

Hi Brooksiders!

My name is Aaron and today I am going to talk to you about term 4 so far for the year 6s. Let’s start shall we?

For this week we were doing Canberra tasks mainly because we couldn't go to Canberra for camp. We were talking about Parliament house, the AIS, The War Memorial and the Royal Australian Mint. Honestly, I enjoyed those activities because I love history and I am interested in Aussie sites like these in Canberra.

In maths we have been working on proportional thinking and order of operations.

For writing we have been learning about Poems. We looked at Couplets, Quatrains, Shape Poetry, Haikus and Free Verse.

All the year 6 students are really looking forward to year 6 graduation. I am excited because we are going into high school. My favourite part of the graduation is that you can hang out with mates and probably raise a little toast to celebrate the end of primary school.

Year 7 transition, I am nervous because there is a little more work for the year 7s and it could get overwhelming. Probably everyone will be nervous because they haven’t been in high school before, but it could be a new and exciting chapter in school life.

But the best thing that is happening this term is that we are so excited that we are finally, FINALLY coming back to school to see our mates and teachers in person. We have been waiting since June to come back so it's been a looooooong 5 months, so I hope we stay in school and not go to lockdown for the 8th or 9th time. (I forget what lockdown we are up to…… we've had so many!!)

I'll see you guys at Brookside, AARON SIGNING OUT!
