This term our preps have been lucky enough to be the first to return onsite. We are so excited to see all our friends and Teachers again and use our amazing new playground this term.
In our writing, we have been looking at Information reports and the difference between facts and opinions. We have been writing our own facts about a range of topics. When we write we always make sure we use a capital letter, finger spaces, a sentence stopper and we make sure our sentence makes sense.

During our maths lessons we have been learning about sharing. It is important that we make sure things are shared evenly by giving each group the same amount of items. We have been practicing this through modelling, drawing and writing our number sentences.
We are constantly learning new sounds and digraphs in our Reading lessons. We have learnt the cued articulation that goes along with each sound and diagraph that we have learnt so far. We have then been using this information to help us sound out all our words.
The Year ones have continued to be busy throughout remote learning and we’ve added our Friday Fun cooking session each week. It has been a huge success and a great way to end each week having fun with their peers on zoom and cooking in the kitchen with their family. We have made chocolate balls, pizza, playdough and beetle biscuits!
The students have continued to work hard in their Initial Lit program with a focus on short vowel sounds and the Floss and Zack rules for when to double the last letter of a word and when to use ‘ck’ at the end of the word.
In Maths, students have been using fractions in shapes and collections, even facing the extra challenge of halving odd numbers! Their knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes has grown tremendously and they can identify the features of many shapes.
In Writing, students have continued to work on information texts and have identified important words in at text, using them to create their own Super Sentences with facts about koalas, kangaroos and echidnas.
We are so proud of our Year 2 students for the amazing work that they have submitted on Seesaw over the last few weeks. Our students have shown great resilience in working through some very difficult times. We will be welcoming our students back to school in Week 3 (Thursday and Friday) for some onsite learning. Everyone is looking forward to reconnecting with each other.
Reading.
We have been working on Information texts and answering questions about them. We have had fun learning interesting facts about real things such as places, things and events.
We have just introduced Persuasive texts that give us an opinion and tries to persuade or convince us to change our minds about something.
Writing
We are continuing with our Storybook lessons, which focus on studying a text in depth. This included extending our vocabulary and writing skills. At the present, we are focusing on a story called ‘You Me and Murrawee’ and our next focus book is ‘Hist!’
Here are some examples of our Seesaw writing submissions about our old toys.
Maths
The Year 2’s have started measurement and have been practising measuring items with informal units. For example, we measured the length of our bed with our feet.
We are now practising how to measure Area and we have been filling in shapes and writing down the number of informal units that cover an area. For example, we have measured the Area of a Smartie packet using dice.
Here some examples of our area Seesaw submissions
We look forward to seeing all our wonderful students in the classroom in Week 3!
The Year 2 Teachers.
In Prep to Year 2 French we have been learning about Les Couleurs (The colours) in French.
Students have practised saying the names of the colours in French and completed a word picture match. Students were asked to reflect on what was the easiest colour to remember and what was the hardest colour to remember. These are some of the responses, showing some great memory strategies for remembering the colour names and revealing why it may be difficult to remember new words in another language.

In Prep to Year 2 Performing Arts, we have been learning about dance crazes which are dances that enjoy a sudden, short burst of popularity, though some may have a longer lasting life, such as the Macarena or the Nutbush. For example, Australia is the current world record holder for the most people dancing the Nutbush at the same time, 2878 in Birdsville, Queensland. Students have been learning these two dances during remote learning and many households in Caroline Springs have the sound of the Macarena and the Nutbush on repeat as students practice before recording their dance moves. On Monday, the Preps returned to school and finally experienced dancing together in a group. Check out their cool dance moves in the photos. Now they are all ready to dance if there is another world record attempt.
