Tournament of Minds

On the 12th of September, it was the Tournament of Minds (TOM) State final. Three Girton teams were successful in making it to the State finals. The teams were Junior Arts, Junior STEM and Senior Social Science. I was part of the Junior STEM team called The Fluorescent Unicorns. In the State finals, we had to compete in an event called ‘Spontaneous’ which is where you have 3-5 minutes to solve a problem, and then 1-2 minutes to present your answer. Our team’s challenge was that the colour red had disappeared, and we had to come up with 3 things it would impact, what it would impact the most, and how people would adapt. My team worked brilliantly together and solved the problem well.

Later that night was the awards ceremony, I eagerly waited for the results hoping that a Girton team had won. I was so excited when they were announcing the Junior STEM awards and they said the winning team was Girton Grammar School team 4 The Fluorescent Unicorns. My team had won! The Senior Social Science was also successful in receiving honours, which is a wonderful result.

Tournament of Minds has been an amazing experience and I look forward to Nationals. I would like to thank all the facilitators and staff involved in TOM and a special thanks to the MiC Mrs Bath and the TOM captain Aidan Clemens.
