Bees With Backpacks Design Challenge

Students from Girton Grammar School's Pathways Hub have shared their design thinking skills and updated us on the solution they are developing to connect beekeepers to farmers, and in turn, support bee health in our community.

Students are in the design empathy stage and recently interviewed a beekeeper and an agronomist to understand real, local industry needs.

Year 9 student Oscar said the student team are creating a tech solution to help beekeepers and farmers connect.  "Beekeepers need to keep moving bees to places where there is pollination – and farmers need bees to pollinate their crops."

Pepper, who is also in Year 9, is having fun working collaboratively with his friends on this project and feels like he is more connected to a real job and working on something that matters.

Beekeeper and Year 9 student Sam thought he knew a lot about bees, and through this project, he is learning about the industry of beekeeping. "It's not just looking at bees and extracting honey, but bees have a positive impact on the environment and also farmers livelihoods."

The students will be doing a live pitch against other students from other Tech Schools in Term 4, as part of the CSIRO + Tech Schools Bees with Backpacks Design Challenge.
