Grade 5 - 6
Year 5/6
Wow! Term 3 is already here! We can’t believe how fast the year has flown. We hope you had a wonderful two weeks off and are refreshed and ready for a fantastic second semester!
Literacy
Term 3 has started off with a close look at nonfiction. In Reading we are locating facts and details in nonfiction texts and examining how the visual elements of a text (maps, diagrams, tables, charts etc) help our understanding. In Writing, we looked at the structure of informative writing and the role that topic sentences have in paragraphs. We have started to research the country of Mexico in order to write our first report! Stay tuned for some exciting reading in the near future!
Maths
In Maths we have continued to consolidate our understanding of place value and the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have played with numbers, looking at all the different ways we can represent the same number, read and order larger numbers and even delved into negative numbers. In Grade 5, we have started to play some quick maths games to help improve our fluency with basic number facts. Such a fun way to start a maths lesson!
Inquiry
This term we are looking at Geography – in particular the location of the major countries of Europe and North America in relation to Australia. We will be studying their major characteristics including the influence of people on the environment.
NAIDOC Week
On the first Friday of the term we had our NAIDOC Week celebration. It was fantastic to see so many students arrive in the red, black and yellow to honour the Indigenous People of Australia. We completed some fun activities as well – including some art, a word search and a crossword.
