Year 11 Drama - "The Riff"

On 2nd June, Year 11 Drama students performed to rave reviews at the Q Theatre at The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith in ‘The Riff’. Blue Mountains Grammar has a long history with the Q Theatre’s annual youth theatre festivals, performing in every iteration for the past 30 years.

Our students worked in class for six weeks with professional theatre practitioner Margaret Davis to create an original piece of theatre based around the idea of “Welcome Home”. This in-class work culminated in our two performances at the Q Theatre on 2nd June, firstly a matinee for local schools, then a public performance that evening.

Year 11’s piece ‘Teetering, Not Falling’ was a sophisticated look at what happens when those who return are not the people they were when they left, and what it is like to return home to a place that is not the same. Our episodic work explored a variety of time periods and theatrical styles, and included dialogue in six different languages, including AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language). Original music was composed and performed by members of the class live on stage. Our student’s performance evoked a powerful audience response, from laughter to tears.

Our students were outstanding ambassadors for the school, and are to be commended for their truly amazing performance.
