Dear Parents/Guardians

When we reflect on the past, what do we focus on? Do we focus on the positive, the negative, or everything in between?

Some people advocate not to reflect on the past and that we should only look forward, however, I believe reflecting on the past can be extremely helpful in equipping us as we move forward.

When we reach the end of a term, I always appreciate reflecting on what has taken place in our school community and how God has journeyed with us through the good, the bad, and the downright challenging.

I enjoy remembering all the great learning and different activities that have taken place here at HCC. From camps to surfing days to Legomaster incursions to the day-to-day tasks in our classrooms, we have much to remember and be thankful for. And while I may not enjoy remembering the negative or challenging things that have taken place, I still find it extremely beneficial so that I can grow in the different areas of my character and professional life when I come across difficulties in the future.

I invite you to join me in reflecting these holidays on what has happened this past semester in our lives. Below I have included some helpful tips I came across recently which may help:

  • When we look at the past, consider all the things we couldn’t accomplish and celebrate our growth.
  • When we look at the past, think about the achievements we have made.
  • When we look at the past, do not focus only on the negative, but on the wonderful things that we have been able to experience as well.
  • When we look at the past, value every moment because the best gifts are those that often go unnoticed.
  • And above all, when we look at the past, smile and thank God, because each stage that we live through, no matter how difficult, was the bridge that God used to take us to where we are today.

Finally, as we reflect on the past semester at HCC in 2023, let us look forward to the future of what God is doing here in our midst.

Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me” NLT
