Student Leadership Team

Future Thinkers Program

On Wednesday 14th June, several of our Year 9 and 10 leaders (Year 9 – Liam Elder, Manxue Guo and Rallex Fabre; Year 10 – Sitara Haidari, Tegan Thompson and Ella Osbourne) attended the Future Thinkers Program with Ms Newsome, at the ABCN office in Sydney.

At this workshop, students learned about the Design Thinking framework. Our Evans student leaders were grouped with student leaders from Holroyd High School. Together, they brainstormed and developed innovative strategies to improve their school environments, such as waste reduction and creating enhanced physical learning spaces.

This was a fabulous opportunity for all students involved as they were able to practise their communication skills within their mixed groups and their problem-solving abilities through application to relevant issues based in a school environment.

Prefects Afternoon Tea

On Wednesday 17th May, our school captains (Cody Bernhardt, Aidan Mercado and Naznin Muhseni) attended a Prefects Afternoon Tea (PAT) at Arthur Phillip High School (APHS). This afternoon event was attended by prefects and leaders from several schools, where they connected, networked, and shared ideas on school leadership and whole school events.

Upon arrival, students received a tour of the innovative teaching spaces at the APHS building in Parramatta which is the first high-rise school in New South Wales. As the first Prefect Cluster, for 2023, students got to know each other better over a competitive round of Harry Potter trivia, including the problem-solving challenge of creating a Harry Potter character using nothing more than newspaper, foil, and sticky tape! Our school captains had a very enjoyable time and are very eager to attend PATs in the future.

World Refugee Day Project

With great thanks extended to Ellie (Year 7 Student Leader) for her inspirational idea of an art project for Refugee Week, we are proud to say that the preparations have resulted in an exemplary showcase for the day. Ellie’s idea was to have students across the school bring in cultural artefacts and create artworks to exhibit their love and appreciation of the country from which they have come.

Students from the High School’s Student Leadership Team (SLT) keenly volunteered their time to this project which allowed them to work alongside their IEC peers. This project was overseen by Ms Mengelson who cannot be thanked enough for her devout dedication to bringing the project to reality.

Over the course of 4 weeks, around 30 IEC students gave up time during their lunch breaks to take part in this project, creating beautiful paintings and drawings, including writing an artist statement on the significance of their piece. The SLT and the IEC students were able to experience a sense of harmony in being a collective, also having listened to the cultures and stories of refugee students created an atmosphere of appreciation and love.

We would like to thank Mr Dempsey for generously sharing his paints and paintbrushes for the students to borrow, as well as the SLSOs who were in charge of safekeeping the artworks. We would like to further extend our gratitude towards the SLT, Ms Mengelson and Ms Liau for their assistance and dedication in ensuring that this project was successful.
