Important Reminders

  • Take Home Books: We will begin to send decodable texts home from Monday the 17th of July. Please ensure that your child has their Take Home Bag. If they do not bring their Take Home Bag, they will not be able to bring a decodable text home.
  • Parent Helpers: This term we would like to invite you into our classrooms to help us with our learning. Based on responses, a roster will be created and sent home in Week 3, with classroom helping beginning in Week 4. Emails have been sent out with links to class Google Forms; however, you can click the classes below to access as well:
  • Dress Up Days: We have two very exciting days coming up this term:
    •  Little Learners Dress Up - Wed 26th July Click here for more information
    • 100 Days of School - Monday 31st of July Click here for more information
  • School Tools
Just a friendly reminder that your child’s school tools book is a great resource for home and school. Inside are word lists (both decodable and heart words) to practise and logins to both Maths Seeds and Wushka.
  • Baby Photos: To help with our Inquiry Unit (read more details below) we are asking students to bring in a photo of themselves as a baby by Thursday the 20th of July, so we can complete a game of ‘Guess the Baby.’ These photos need to be named, and kept a secret from their peers!

Learning in Action

Literacy

The Preps have all been eager to jump right back into their learning! This week we took a step back and revised the key skills to writing, looking at encoding words and sentences. We practised correctly spelling words by writing the sounds we hear using stage 2 sounds (m, d, o, g, c, k, e, u, f, h), and created sentences that included a subject, verb and adverbial where. The preps loved putting this into practise when writing recounts of their holidays.

During Reading, students revised their accuracy strategies and applied them when reading words with Stage 2 sounds. It was fantastic to see them trying a different strategy when one didn’t work, then improve their comprehension by going back over the road and rereading it.

This term we will be introducing a new focus on ‘Expanding Vocab’ to enhance our comprehension. Using books by Indigenous authors to link with NAIDOC week, students tuned into words that were new or interesting. Some words we found included mob, elders and fella.

In Little Learners, students met Jack Jellyfish and Zoe Zebra to learn the sounds for ‘Jj’ and ‘Zz’.

Preview- In Reading students will continue learn the new accuracy strategy of 'looking for parts we know'  whilst beginning a unit on Poetry. During Writing we will continue working on our accurate spelling, learning the rule of 'adding s for plurals' and developing our own ideas. We will meet characters for Xx, Yy and Qq, during Word Work.

Maths

The Preps finished Term 2 with subtraction and learning to take numbers away from the total. This week Preps have been introduced to the new topic of ordinal numbers, which is the order something comes in (e.g race, dates, lists, competitions). Students have learnt to verbalise up to the 10th position and have loved racing vehicles, animals, ooshies and other objects around a race track, then verbalising each object's ordinal number.  This week we have also revised our data unit and continued learning about graphs.

Students have come back eager to continue working on their Maths Masters goal. It is important to remember that passing a Maths Masters goal requires the students to be fluent at the skill in order for them to successfully move to the next goal.

Preview- Students will continue learning about ordinal numbers, data graphs and start learning about teen numbers.

Inquiry

This term our whole school inquiry focus is on history, with the Preps engaging in a unit called ‘Our Life Stories.’ Through this unit, students will gain a deep understanding of their own personal histories and those of others, including people close to them and notable others. The main focus of this unit is for students to understand significant events that happen to a person, how they change and develop over time.

With this in mind, we ask that students bring in a baby photo of themselves before Thursday the 20th of July. We will be using this to play a game of ‘Guess the Baby’ and to compare ourselves from then and now. Please note these photos will NOT be returned.

Preview- Students will compare and contrast things they did as a baby and things they are able to do now, before comparing life events of an adult.

Wellbeing

As part of the 4Rs program, Preps have been focussing on problem solving, which includes being able to identify options and ways to solve conflict. In week nine of last term, students worked in groups of three to demonstrate friendly and unfriendly decisions. This week, we started a new topic: ‘Stress Management’, and played the melting tiger game to develop self-calming and self-control strategies.

Preview: Next week for RRRR, we will be focussing on things that make us stressed and how to cope. Friendology will see students begin on their fourth topic, Friendship Facts.
