New Energy Technology Program
The Baw Baw and Latrobe Local Learning and Employment Network’s (BBLLEN) New Energy Technology Program provides an opportunity for local students from years 8, 9 and 10 to work on real world challenges with industry mentors. The MSCW team is named Mission Transmission and includes Ben Allsop, Archie Dunn, Jorja McGibney and Annabella Walsh along with AusNet mentors Aaron and Brett. More recently the team came up with a winning name and ideas for the upcoming Gippy Youth Summit. Annabella Walsh created a polished final design and it will now feature as the event flyer around Gippsland. The impressive work is attached.
Inspiring Careers in Health Camp
Our group of six students plus Mrs Martin and Miss Cabarubia travelled to Federation University for the Inspiring Careers in Health Camp on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 May. On arrival we received a goodies bag and head to our rotation activities which included: Nursing and midwifery, Exercise and Sports Science where Holly tested here vertical jump skills. Followed by a lovely lunch at Fed Uni Café, Communication board activity for Speech Pathology and equipment exploration for Occupational Therapy and a presentation on Physiotherapy. We then went to the Monash Rural Health to learn more about Monash medicine and pathways. Our final session for the day was a presentation relating to Community and Human Services.
We accessed our on-campus accommodation and got to experience living on ‘res’ like a uni student and got changed for the Inspiring Careers in Health Dinner.
The dinner involved a two-course meal and allowed us to hear from a range of presenters who have had varied pathways in health. As well as meet and speak with experienced guests and other young people interested in health careers.
Returning to our accommodation we embarked on some serious card games whilst having valuable career conversations.
Early start the next morning with a bacon and egg brekkie sponsored by Latrobe Valley Authority.
We travelled to TAFE Gippsland, Morwell and really enjoyed the highly practical activities and facilities in nursing, aged care, allied health assistance services. More great food and a great discussion about VET options and pathways to health careers.
Across the camp the students identified the following as their highlight:
- Lani Vilcins – Federation University’s Speech Pathology session as this wasn’t something I had considered
- Jayme Axe – The Dinner and opportunity to speak to the experienced guests, I learnt a lot
- Matisse Debnam – Federation University’s Nursing Session, confirmed my interest in pursuing nursing
- Mikayla Graham – Nursing/Mid, Exercise and Sports Science
- Ella Kleeven – Federation University’s Midwifery Baby Birth Activity
- Holly Carlsen – TAFE Gippsland’s highly practical Nursing activities
We are scheduled to attend a Health Industry Tour this week (on Thursday 22 June) at West Gippsland Healthcare Group and Fairview. Sincere thanks to the BBLLLEN for organising this fabulous opportunity.
Year 10 Work Placement
From Monday 5 June to Friday 16 June, Year 10 students participated in work placement and/or a school supervised program. The students in attendance have received overwhelmingly positive feedback and we are sincerely grateful to our many and varied host organisations.
The school supervised program involved a mix of service activities around the school and careers activities.
Student Perspective: Year 10 Work Experience at Walhalla Goldfields Railway written by Nick Scott
Give an overall rating of your work placement: 11 out of 10
Provide a summary of the tasks you did while on work experience with Walhalla Goldfields Railway: I did conductor work which is checking if it is clear to depart after the passengers got on or off, check tickets, had a ride in the locomotive cab with the driver, and tooted (at some parts) as we headed to Thompson and back to Walhalla.
In what ways did work placement provide you with useful information which might assist with career decision-making in the future? It provided me with information on what I needed to do and what not to do. Despite the Walhalla Goldfields Railways Preserving a part of a 762mm (2 ft 6 in) railway line that opened from MOE to Walhalla in 1920 and closed 44 years later then reopened in ’94. It can be a good place to get experience especially if you wish to become either a train driver or conductor for VLINE, NSW Trainline or any other similar train transport organisation.
Student Perspective: Year 10 Work Experience at Myli written by Evelyn Graafsma
Since I could remember, books and stories have been a huge part of my life, offering a place to escape to and providing me with valuable opportunities to learn. Choosing to complete my work experience with the library team has been an invaluable opportunity, allowing me to work alongside the welcoming and knowledgeable team members. The people I’ve met have been nothing but kind and provided insight into the various tasks undertaken across the Myli branches.
During the week I assisted in story time, sorted shelves (and seeds), and experienced picking up and dropping off books at various library branches, including Pakenham, Emerald, and the Mobile Library. The incredible team is very community driven, with carefully planned events and projects that benefit the community and provide people with the space to learn and socialize.
The time I spent at Myli has shown me just how much work goes on that I wouldn’t have expected, and to experience the dedication each person has for the job has been and eye opening experience. Being able to participate in this incredible community and welcoming environment for the week has been a wonderful opportunity and provided valuable experience that is certain to help me in future endeavours.
Customer Perspective: Year 10 SWL Customer feedback about Emma Middleton at Salon Seven
I have some wonderful feedback to provide about Emma Middleton who is currently on work experience.
I walked into the hairdressers on Tuesday to be greeted by a warm smile and welcome by a young lady.
She promptly offered me a coffee and made it for me. She then continued to greet the other customers politely and graciously into the hairdressers, asked customers if they wanted another tea/coffee etc.
She was then thrown into the deep end washing my hair and taking the feedback from the two hairdressers all onboard to improve her skills.
She then offered to start folding towels if there wasn’t anything else that needed to be done in the salon at that point.
The other customers in the salon were asking who she was, thinking she was a new apprentice not on work experience.
Anyway, I wanted to pass on what an excellent job she was doing at representing herself and Marist-Sion.
