During week 7, the Wexford 7/8s had a visit from NBC Alumni Luke McConarchy, Electrician, and business owner; Jasmine Lawrence, Work support consultant; Samantha Wilson, University Commerce student and KPMG grad program, and Cody Jeynes, Studying Space Science at RMIT.
Hanin - They told us how their life was in school. Their school life was tough, hard, and stressful because there were things that they didn't know and found challenging in school so they ignored it and didn’t do anything. which means it would flip over their future. But they didn't know when they were in year 10 they strongly regretted how they acted in year 7 so they worked and worked until they graduated. Their first job. They talked about their first job as a waitress, a pizza worker, coles worker and cashier. Finding jobs is hard. You need to make your resume and send it to different kinds of people for them to hire you. It can take days, weeks, months and years to get a job because of how hard it is to find a job. Luke, Jasmine, Samantha ,Cody work and work and they finally get their best job that suits their style.
Our year 8 students from Wexford and Tallis were lucky enough to go on an excursion driven by their Science studies. The students went off to the Geelong Botanical Gardens to learn about nature and the concept of Biomimcry,
Shayla - The year 8’s went on a science excursion to the Botanical Gardens. When we arrived we were greeted by Amanda and Kim.We started to walk through and saw some beautiful trees and plants. We went to a undercover shelter to eat our snacks. Then Amanda and Kim was talking about the rules and planning the groups. We were spilt. My group went off for to a nature walk through lots of majestic trees and we had to be quiet so we called hear all of the beautiful birds chirping away. After that they announced that were going to use the binoculars, microscope and a little magnifying glass to investigate all about trees and flowers. After lunch we did a few more actives with teams and we had to see if we can base a project on the Bunya Bunya tree my team decided to make a natural umbrella to protect animals and keep you out of the rain .
The 7/8s are also deep into their Educational Research Projects focusing on Medieval History.
Meraj In our whole 7/8 classes there's our Erp, (Educational Research Projects) the project for our humanities subject. Students throughout their classes are making different types of artifacts and models for their topics. For example, some people are doing their projects about ancient Japan and the medieval era. Some students have gathered up to make swords, armor, masks etc. for our ERP the 7/8 had a visit to the Kryal Castle which helped a lot of students learn a range of different things about their project and improve themselves. The ERP makes the student become more creative and helps them achieve their goals by trying a variety of things. In addition, it helps them with persistence and not stop till they have achieved their goal, as well as making it fun for them. For my project, I researched and took experience from google maps that shows a virtual museum and had the plan to create one of my own. However, I added different kinds of Japanese art and it made me try a new thing I have never tried before.

On Thursday 7 June, we had our inaugural Northern Bay College Leadership Summit. This was held at our Staughton Vale Outdoor Education Camp with all of our Student Leaders from across the College invited. It was a wonderful day for our Year 7-12 Student Leaders to meet together, have some fun and were joined by an incredible guest speaker, Nathan Murray, the Managing Director of Morris Finance. The themes that resonated throughout the day were ‘never give up’ and the importance of collaboration.
Nathan Murray shared his personal story with our leaders as well as key leadership strategies and knowledge he has developed over decades of leading highly successful companies. The students were highly engaged throughout and asked wonderful follow up questions, relishing in the opportunity to learn from such a strong leader. Nathan was so taken by our leaders, he is offered several more opportunities for students to continue to build their leadership skills and provide some real-life experiences in the business world.
The day concluded with students having the opportunity to consider a campus based end of Year 8 celebration. This will be an ongoing piece of work for our leaders, gathering ideas from the students they represent, developing a plan and a proposal and organising the activity. We are looking forward to hearing the wonderful ideas from each campus.
Some of the thoughts of our leaders from the day:
‘I learned that you can never give up. Always follow you dream no matter how hard it is and learn from your mistakes’ Guneet
‘I learnt that a leader should take the thoughts and ideas of their team in consideration and to never give up’ Maddi
