Year 5 Specialist News - Term 3

Visual Art
The Term 3 Unit of Inquiry is called ‘Street Art’, which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme- 'How we express ourselves'.
The Unit explores how we express ourselves through responsibility and perspective, focusing on the different Street Art throughout the world. Taking inspiration from and paying attention to the unique style and cultural influences of the street artists - Oteki, Remed and Agostino.
Students Create
- Detailed sketch book illustrations, which show exploration and development of their street character and style. Applying effective use of tone and pattern to enhance the final illustration.
- An Illustrated character mounted within a cardboard box. The exterior of the box painted and decorated in the street art style. Demonstrating skilled application of paint and balanced use of colour to complete the overall piece.
- Painting large scale mural to create a street character. This activity shows effective use of scale, skilled application of outdoor paint, use of colour and design.
Physical Education
The Term 3 unit we are focusing on is 'How we organise ourselves'.
Focus: Athletics- Distance and Sprint runs, Hurdling, Long Jump, High Jump, Discus and Shot Put. Use these skills to participate in the House Athletics competition and further into District, Division and State competitions if capable.
Students will undertake a Learning Task on, 'How to create a game'. They will unpack an array of different invasion games and adapt to suit skill levels. They will organise how the game can be broken down into various skills and develop strategies on how to play the game; what is required to teach/coach these skills to a team and how you organise a group to follow instructions and directions related to this game.
Concepts: Connection: relating the game or skill learnt to play/compete at a higher level with development and coaching from a peer.
Learner Profile Attributes: Caring: showing sensitivity towards others as they implement skills and try to teach/coach those skills to their peers. Developing a sense of personal commitment to helping others.
Music
Focus – dance
This term we will learn, create, rehearse and perform ‘Dance’.
Students will be encouraged to work collaboratively with fellow students and to rehearse effectively within set time constraints in order to view a live performance by Musica Viva called Two Wheeled Time Machine.
They will also learn a song called 'Words Make the World Go Around' as part of a whole school performance event - Busking for Change. This fund raiser and music event is a National Initiative from the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.
Students Will
- Learn steps.
- Learn sequences.
- Create short dances.
- Perform to peers.
- Several different styles will be covered, including Line Dance and Contemporary Free Form.
- Students will continue to touch on Drama, Singing and Music (ukulele).
Library
The children are timetabled weekly, to borrow books from the Library with their classroom teachers. During these borrowing sessions, they will gain a better understanding of Library locations and the borrowing/returning procedures.
The focus will be on reading for enjoyment, interest and information. The children will have the opportunity to consolidate their literacy skills and further their development in literature appreciation.
The Library program also supports and extends the units of inquiry being studied in each year level and provides classrooms with resources to enrich the units offering varied forms of information.
