Boys' Football

BMGS U13s defeated Oxley Bs, 6-1

Apart from Paddy “O Canhao” (the cannon) Humby, and Ben sadly away on REPS duty, we had a full bench, with Silas and Eligh S arriving a full hour before kickoff. The Oxley coach requested that since they had a man short due to a no show, were we willing to remove one of our guys to even the field? As Grammar men don’t kick down, and always play fair, and we agreed to play a man short as well.

Our boys did what they do, kept their positions, communicated well, and kept the forwards supplied with balls. Within five minutes we scored after great tactical play by Thomas “The Magician” Hanemann and Olly “La Pulga Atomica” Easton. And for the first half, and most of the second, the Oxley goalie really earned his transfer fee, stopping many ferocious shots at goal, letting in quite a few, and at times being saved by the uprights and the crossbar, or by the bad luck that denied several tactically brilliant shots at goal by our valiant captain Olly, whose calm demeanour and accurate reading of the game, as well as his ability to go from a casual saunter to ferocious outbreaks of dribbling wizardry that leave opponents gasping in his wake, as well as being able to competently play striker, winger, mid, and even defence, are reminiscent of the style of Lionel Messi. “La Pulga Atomica” (the atomic flea) is a fitting name for Olly.

Caspian was barely tested in goal for the entire game, only having to dust off his gloves for a few attempts by Oxley in the second half, which, due to unfortunate blunders in defence, conceded a goal. The boys have embraced the idea that when our goalie is inactive, it’s an indication that the team is doing what it needs to be doing.  Silas was outstanding, showcasing his dual talents as a great keeper and a solid attacking midfielder.

Overall, the outcome of the game never seemed in doubt. The boys showed complete dominance at all layers of the game, sealing a resounding 6-1 victory, made all the sweeter by being a fair victory that we didn’t win by advantage of having extra players . Tom again earned Man of the Match for his haul of goals. An excellent effort from the whole team this weekend! The boys are really looking strong for our upcoming games, especially the grudge match against St Spyridon at home on 5th August!

Mr Zen Nzula, Coach

BMGS U14s defeated St Stanislaus College, 5-0

It was a lovely day at our home ground and watching the Boys’ First XI come from behind to win helped with motivation for the boys as they warmed up for their game.

From the kick off we hit the ground running, with Henry scoring within the first few minutes following excellent passing play through the middle trio of Sam, James and Xavier S.  This goal settled the boys' nerves and they were quick to dominate field position. James scored our second soon after, taking advantage of time and space to get a great shot on target.  Kit and Luke scored their first goals of the year, Luke’s goal came from a desire to not stop running after the ball whilst Kit’s goal came after a great corner from James and flick on from Henry, reacting the fastest out of everyone on the field to slot our fourth goal into the net.

The boys went into the second half with the mentality that scores were still locked at Nil-Nil. BMGS continually piled on the pressure and had multiple chances to increase their lead. The SSC goalkeeper was outstanding in the second half, continually thwarting our attacks.  When SCC did get in our half, Luke and Toby in goals, Jaiden, Xavier J, Tom, Dante and Mitchell were quick to clear and distribute the ball to our midfield and forwards. BMGS scored their fifth and final goal via a mazy run and finish from Xavier S, just as the full time whistle blew.

The boys put in a great team performance in front of their home crowd. We are looking forward to a weekend off to rest any early season injuries so that we are primed and ready to go for the second half of the season.

Mr Chris Johnson, Coach

BMGS U15s defeated St Stanislaus College, 1-0

Playing the last game of the day's draw, the U15s were fired up after a sweep of wins by the BMGS teams that preceded them.  We were looking forward to taking on our first opposition of the season, St Stanislaus College.

From the U14s, Henry, Luke and James played up, with Ryan Ivery making an appearance for the second half.  Henry scored a goal in the first half and Luke demonstrated a wide range of beautiful saves. One in particular came after a loose ball to the wing that looked, for all intents and purposes, like it would lead to a goal. Luke secured the shot and distributed the ball effectively to give us the counter. Despite some strong competitive efforts from Fabian up front, he was unable to get a shot away.

In the second half, after devouring a bag of lolly snakes, the Grammar Boys played harder, getting to the ball first, chasing the ball with tenacity and picking up the pace. Otto, Lachlan and Finn made particular efforts in tracking players when the ball was turned over, working hard to recover possession – Otto finding his space effectively in a new position, playing centre mid with Finn.

With directions from the coach to push higher and higher, we got to play a far more attack-forward style than usual. This definitely is still taking some time to get used to, and in the next few training sessions we will work on holding space in the midfield and asserting ourselves in empty space.  All players continue to work on taking less time with the ball and getting their heads up to execute passes.

Charlie rescued many a ball from his position in centre back, charging out to the left and right wings to clear the through ball from the opposition’s feet.  In the final third, Jed cracked a stunning long ball at the keeper, who barely managed to save it. Jed continued to impress with his pace and his dedication to the counter attack.

It was another excellent game for the 15s, who are improving every week!

Ms Annaliese Stammer, Coach

BMGS Second XI defeated Oxley 3s, 12-0

The Boys' Second XI were back on home soil to take on Oxley College 3s. With now three wins on the trot, the recent success had really brought the team together and they were eager to keep the winning streak alive.

BMGS came out firing from the whistle, Thomas O’Connor was quick off his mark and opened the scoring with an excellent chip shot over the keeper that found the back of the net to make it 1-0 in our favour, in under two minutes. Both teams were low on players, having only nine available to take the field, but BMGS adapted and dominated the park.

Nathan Hilder was extremely strong in defense alongside Jem Sullivan who dropped out of position to make up for the missing spots. Jed, Otto and Charlie once again were playing up from 15s and provided instant impact in their respective roles. Charlie Mannes found success early and smashed in a double to make the score BMGS 3 - Oxley 0. Jules Beal controlled the right side with ease and the support from Finn Brinkmann behind him created major problems for Oxley’s defense as Jules played an excellent ball that Thomas took with ease as he put it past the keeper to bring the score to 4-0.

Jules was hungry for a goal as he swiftly won back possession from the restart and smashed one in to make it 5-0. With ten Minutes remaining in the first half, Charlie Mannes added another goal that was closely followed by another two -  one from Jules and one from Tom - to bring the score to 8-0, at the the end of the first half.

At this stage, we enacted the mercy rule (taking effect after a seven goal difference), and pulled a few of our players off to even the playing field.

From the restart, BMGS came out just as strongly, and Charlie, Otto and Jed from the 15s were playing brilliantly as Jem Sullivan held the line and shut down any chance Oxley had. Callum Knussen saw little action between the sticks but when called into play he kept his lines clear with ease and with brilliant distribution from goal. Jed took his chances and displayed an excellent run from inside our half right into Oxley’s goal box (beginning to be a Jed trademark) that saw Finn Brinkman in the right place at the right time to get the final touch and his first goal of the season. Charlie Mannes then added a fourth goal to his name, whilst Jem continued to work hard in the middle and was selflessly creating chances for the rest of the team, displaying excellent composure through his passes. Tom and Jules both capitalised on Jem’s through balls, making his hard work pay off as they both slotted home another goal each as the game came to a close.

Boys, you have really outdone yourselves on this one. 12 goals and a clean sheet; you couldn’t have asked for a better result. Another strong team performance filled with skill and brilliance all round. Well done, lads; you smashed this one out of the park. BMGS has now secured four wins in a row and is sitting on the top of the table!

BMGS First XI defeated Redfield College, 3-2

The Boys' First XI were back on home turf for Round 6 of the season for a matchup against Redfield College. Still undefeated, the BMGS boys knew this match was going to be a big one. From the kickoff, both teams came out incredibly strongly.

Our starting backline of Will Zakis, Richard Cunningham, Isaac Nicholls and Connor Secker were tested immediately as RFC pressed hard into our defensive half. Jaxon Fraser was held strong in the middle and with the support of Captain Jett Fendall and Will Grono, shut down the early chances of a RFC counter attack. Our first chance came from the  skilful run of Jaiden Kennedy on the left side that he was unlucky not to finish on. Flynn Nicholls and Max Anicic were causing problems for RFC’s defense, quickly intercepting their short play out from the back, but missing the final touch to open the scoring.

Throughout the first fifteen minutes, the game was neck and neck, with an even display of strong football from both teams. Chances on goal came for both teams with Jack Roberson having to make some quick saves to get it out of danger, and Max narrowly missing the net at the other end of the park. BMGS were playing better Football but RFC were starting to capitalise on our mistakes as the high press was causing problems for the BMGS boys. With the scores being locked at Nil-all, a mix up from a ball into the box saw RFC awarded a penalty. RFC snuck the spot kick past and into the back of the net to open the scoring 1-0 to RFC.  BMGS finished the half a goal down for the first time this season and went to the sheds to regroup. The half time talk was loud and intense and the frustration was obvious as the boys felt strongly that they were playing the better game.

From the restart, both teams came out firing again. With the intensity levels now doubled from the first half, BMGS were looking for a way back in. Oliver Drew provided instant impact once again in attack and Trin Camilleri boosted our defense as they both took to the field. BMGS were back dominating in the middle with Will Grono putting in an absolute shift, and Jaiden Kennedy playing out of his skin as his confidence on the ball was putting RFC on the backfoot.

RFC were still pressing high and after a loose ball in our half saw an RFC shot taking a huge deflection, it unfortunately landed in the back of the net to make the score RFC 2 - BMGS 0.

Now two goals down, the BMGS boys used this as the kick they needed to take back control of the game and, from the kickoff, they smashed into gear. Connor Secker doubled his efforts and began to dominate the left side. Isaac took control of the backline as Will Zakis turned up the heat and won the ball back into possession. Jack Roberson was not letting RFC get another one past and punched his line clear. Max and Oliver were back causing problems for RFC as both of them kicked into gear. With only thirty minutes left in the game, a close chance from Skipper Jett Fendall saw BMGS awarded a corner and after a desperate effort from both sides to win it, the ball fell to Flynn Nichols who squeezed it into the back of the net at the far post to make the score RFC 2 - BMGS 1. The boys didn’t stop after that, taking control and back to playing the usual Football we all know and love.

RFC started to slip up and Flynn took advantage and found himself through on goal, taking the chance well and smashing in an equalizer off the crossbar to draw the scores 2-2. With only ten minutes remaining, it was anyone's game. The cheers of the BMGS supporters kept the fire going as BMGS were absolutely dominating RFC. Jaxon was having a field day in the middle and the cracks were starting to show as Isaac’s free kicks were proving dangerous on the RFC defense.

In the dying minutes of the game, Coach Cameron, Miss Stammer and all the BMGS crowd were on the edge of their seats as BMGS were coming so close to a winner and, with only 20 seconds remaining AND with a brilliant ball over the top, Flynn headed the ball over the keeper into the back of the net to win the match BMGS 3 - RFC 2!

This was a fairytale ending to an absolute 'match of the ages' and another much deserved win by BMGS to show why they are at the top of the table.

Boys, well done, you played like absolute champions all game. We couldn’t be more proud of you; you played your hearts out and earned this one the most. Undefeated STILL!

Goal Scorer - Flynn Nicholls (3).  Man Of The Match - Flynn Nicholls (Another Hattrick Hero).

Netball

BMGS Intermediate Gold were defeated by Barker College.

In our first away game of the season, our Intermediate Golds battled it out against Barker 10 in a challenging game. Liv and Kiah dominated the mid-court, showcasing their impressive skills and lightning-fast foot work. Despite feeling a bit under the weather, Bridey put up a fierce fight. Iluka and Liz worked their magic in the goal circle, while Gretel and Ruby unleashed their exciting new defensive move, ‘Operation Elevation’. Giselle, as our formidable Wing Defence, not only dominated the court with her intercepts, but also managed to form an unexpected friendship with the opposition, unintentionally becoming a delightful distraction during their Centre passes. Although victory may have eluded the girls this time, they will have their chance for redemption at a home game with Barker 10 in July.

BMGS Intermediate Blue were defeated by Barker College

In a challenging match against Barker 10, the girls showcased remarkable resilience, even with a few players absent. Whole the score did not favour us, the girls ensured that their time on the court was enjoyable. Yvette, Meenatchi and Liv delivered an exhausting performance in the midcourt. Aroha and Iluka secured some impressive goals, while Ruby and Kiah worked tirelessly together in defence. In the final quarter, when victory seemed unlikely, Kiah debuted as Goal Shooter and managed to get some points on the board. Meanwhile, Iluka showed her versatility by playing Goal Defence and secured numerous intercepts for the team. Notably, Iluka's new team warm-up game likely contributed to our intercepts and prepared the girls for an enjoyable match. Giselle even managed a guest appearance in midcourt during the final quarter, injecting some fresh energy into the game. A special thanks to Zarah, whose versatility in filling in both for attack and defence positions was invaluable to the team. Though the final result may not have reflected the team’s hard work and dedication, they left the court with heads held high. We will meet Barker 10 again in July and hope to secure a victory!

BMGS Junior Blue were defeated by Barker College

The girls played well this week and showed really good sportsmanship when they were down on the scores. In particular Ruby showed amazing leadership, pumping the girls up and encouraging them to do their best!
