Year 11 Legal Studies Excursion – Visit to Supreme Court of Victoria

On 15 August, Years 11 and 12 Legal Studies students visited the Supreme Court of Victoria. Martin, our volunteer guide from the Court Network, was a font of information. We walked through some of the court’s long corridors, soaking in the history of this awe-inspiring heritage-listed building.

Martin ushered us into an empty courtroom and introduced us to His Honour, Justice Tim Ginnane and his two Associates, Connor and Henry. The judge was generous enough to share some of his experiences with us, as well as putting our own sentencing skills to the test!

They were also kind enough to answer our questions and pleased to receive our small tokens of appreciation. Justice Ginnane was particularly impressed with our interest in the law and court and emailed us afterwards to congratulate us.

Next, Martin took us up into the public gallery to view a witness examination in a murder case. We were fortunate to see a court translator in action, as well as a barrister losing his temper! And, of course, as it was getting interesting it was time to go.

Our visit was wrapped up with a guided tour of the famous Supreme Court Library, taking in the judges’ portraits and reading the newspaper from exactly 100 years ago.

Many students were inspired to return here one day as legal professionals.
