Monash Division Athletics Day
The Monash Division Athletics Day was held on a sunny winter’s day at Knox Athletics Track with a team of 70 SOC athletes competing in various track and field events. The day started well with many of our students obtaining a place in the top three for their events.
Our students must be commended not only on their athletic abilities but on their sportsmanship towards other schools and their encouragement towards their own team members – this support was evident throughout the day.
A special mention to:
- Cayla Kingsley from Year 8 who was awarded the 14-year Girls Age Group Champion for the Division.
- Lily Uzice from Year 7 who broke the Monash Division Triple Jump record by 10cm with a jump of 9.08 metres.
We are extremely proud of both girls and their achievements.

Junior Hockey
The Year 7/8 mixed hockey team travelled to Hawthorn Hockey Club to compete against Wheelers Hill and Brentwood Secondary Colleges. The team played with confidence and flair in the first game against Wheelers Hill, controlling the momentum for most of the game and came out on top 3-0. Next up was Brentwood 7s which was another dominant display 3-0. Then came the big test against Brentwood 8s. Both teams came into the game undefeated so this was the playoff to decide the winner.
It was an exciting display of teamwork, tactics and feats of bravery, particularly by Ruby Michielli, the only girl playing, who attacked the ball effectively with controlled aggression.
Throughout the match the Brady brothers had a significant impact against a bigger, stronger and slightly arrogant Brentwood outfit. The score was 1-1 until the last 20 seconds. Brentwood got a lucky break after a questionable umpiring decision and made the most of it by running the ball out of defence, down the wing, and scoring the winning goal with 10 seconds to go. Nail biting and gut wrenching.
All members of the team demonstrated both humility and pride after a game that could have gone either way.
Great coaching performances by Sam Pigden, Tamika Cantlon and Aiden George are acknowledged.
All in all, it was a terrific outing on a beautiful warm spring day.

Girls basketball
The intermediate girls’ basketball was enjoyed by all at the Monash Division interschool sports day recently. Our girls worked amazingly as a team and everyone shined individually.
Throughout the games our team improved every time the girls took to the court together. As each girl’s confidence and technique improved the team bonded more and more strongly throughout the day.
Each and every girl on this team was strong enough to overcome the rocky start to the day and finish with a win in their last game, the best possible outcome.
The girls need to be commended on their grit and willingness to better themselves during the day. Hopefully, they can continue to improve for next years Division competition.

The day got off to a bad start with the bus turning up late so both the A and B teams had to forfeit their first-round matches against Brentwood Secondary College.
Interestingly, results for both teams were almost a mirror image for the remaining rounds, losing to both John Monash and Wellington Secondary Colleges.
The only wins for the day came in the last round where South Oakleigh defeated the Wheelers Hill A team and drew with their B team.
Despite some disappointing results, all competitors enjoyed the day in a sport- friendly atmosphere.
