Senior Boys Fencing - Student Reflection

Competitions. For some, hours and months of hard work and training would be invested behind the scenes for the best possible outcome. However, for the twelve members of Suzanne Cory’s newly established senior boys fencing team, we had barely four weeks to refine and get our skills in check in time for one. Although it initially seemed bleak, we didn’t plan on embarrassing ourselves either; we were in the endgame. In the span of those weeks, through all our sacrificed early Wednesday dismissals and lunchtimes, we were ready to face the music.

Rocking up to the State Fencing Centre at 7am on a Sunday wasn’t anyone’s cup of tea. But nonetheless, this only showed our commitment in performing well. We were separated into three different teams - Suzanne Cory A, Suzanne Cory B and Suzanne Cory C. Before the commencement of our first matches, most of us were a nervous wreck and felt the heat; this only increased our team morale. As the day progressed on, with the support and positivity of our teammates, we pulled ourselves together and put up a gallant fight against highly experienced fencers, especially those of state-level. In the end, we won a bout, and lost three only by a single hit (sucks, I know) but given the ample time we had, it was an absolute win. It only meant that we had room for more improvement and success. If we performed better than most teams from a mere 4 weeks of preparation, who knows what our team is capable of in the future?

With a second team competition scheduled for August, we have committed ourselves to even smarter training over the next three months so that we can convert those single hit defeats in to victories!

Senior Girls’ Netball - Student Reflection

As the students pulled up to Eagle stadium there was buzz of excitement and  and anticipation for the day ahead. Both the male and female teams were faced with three rounds of netball, all with its own set of unique challenges. As the day progressed, it was evident that our camaraderie as a team strengthened which was reflected in our performance and the ability to work together.  The girls team was successful in winning one out of the three games whilst the boys team was able to win one and draw one. Even though it was great to win, it's safe to say that the highlight of the day were the memories we created that will be treasured for a long time coming.

Intermediate Girls’ Netball - Student Reflection

This year I had the opportunity to participate in the Suzanne Cory Girls Intermediate Netball team, and I represented our school at Eagle stadium amongst many other schools in the district. Prior to the game, the girls and I, along with Ms Carroll, gave up our lunch times in order to practice for the game and learn both team structure and getting to know each other. The team, made up of nine girls, allocated certain training sessions with the boys’ intermediate team in order to readily prepare ourselves for the event.

Upon arrival we got comfortable and began warm ups and was given a wonderful motivational speech by team member Sam T, and then prepared ourselves for our first game which was against Manor Lakes. Unfortunately, we lost our first game by a number of points, but our team was able to surpass the loss and saw it as a positive impact, because it taught us where our weaknesses were. By the time the second game came around, against Tarneit P-9 College, we were able to pick up our pace as a team and learnt our areas of strength and through our teamwork we were able to win our next two games.

Although our hard effort we applied, unfortunately in our last game we lost by one point in the last few seconds of the game, placing us 6th out of the 9 teams that attended that day. Even though we did not come first, the girls and I went back to school with smiles on our faces because we knew we tried our best and we had fun which at the end of the day, is what matters. Through this experience I was able to grow relationships with other students and learn what it’s really like to be in a team and have people who got your back.

The extra-curricular opportunities at Suzanne Cory allow us to experiment in different areas and aspects of the social environment, allowing us to develop new hobbies and discover new skills. This experience was well worth it and I am definitely keen on trying out for the team again next year.

Senior Softball

On the 13th of May, the Suzanne Cory senior girls competed in the western metro region softball competition. The twelve students traveled to Geelong to compete with Sunbury Secondary College and Matthew Flinders College. Despite limited practice, the girls put up a strong fight and played a respectful game. It was a tough day and the girls played their best . They unfortunately lost two games but soldiered through the cold day and finished in third place.

Senior Boys AFL - Student Reflection

The thought of Suzanne Cory playing regionals for AFL is surreal, but it was almost a reality. Being the captain of a sport, our school would consider as ‘foreign’ was strange. With many of our students not knowing how the game of AFL works, it was very surprising to see many students put 110% effort towards the practise and the games. If we compared our school to others, talent-wise, we barely had anything. However, we had something which talent can never beat: dedication, hard work and character. As a team, we didn’t only play for the game, we played for each other, and that’s what put Suzanne Cory over the edge when beating Werribee by one goal. Even though we didn’t win the last game (losing only by 12 points), we certainly made history for the school as the first senior boys AFL team to win in Suzanne Cory history. Personally, I enjoyed the experience. The opportunity to captain a team and lead SCHS to a victory is going to be memorable. But as my final year closes, I am grateful for my team and that I was able to represent the school for AFL one last time. #onelastdance

Intermediate Boys AFL

The intermediate boys AFL competition was a rollercoaster. Our day started off slightly delayed due to the rain but the dewy conditions didn’t stop our enthusiasm as we gave Manor Lakes a good contest. In the end, they outclassed us, breaking away in the second half. We then regrouped and started the second game well. We were able to prevent Werribee from capitalising from their forward entries keeping them to only 4 goals for the entire game. Generally speaking, our work rate and intensity had improved significantly and several positives could be taken from our performance. The boys’ spirits were up after our second game and we were ready to get on the scoreboard. Our third and final game, against Truganina, started particularly slowly with several rushed behinds. Tishane being the team’s backbone for the day played exceptionally well helping us rebound off our defensive 50. Adam, Varad and Sandy all provided plenty of run down the wings delivering the ball into safe hands inside our forward 50. Amanuel, Sandy and Daniel kicked 5 goals between them helping us get over the line and to our first ever AFL win.

Senior Badminton

The first round of the senior badminton competition turned out to be a heated head-to-head battle with Werribee Secondary. With extra time on our hands, the convenor had agreed for all matches to be best of 3 sets. There were close matches across the board and students were pushed past their usual 1-set limitations. In the end, the girls had won 5-1 matches and while the boys had close matches, they got knocked out with a scoreline of 0-6 matches.

This year’s district badminton tournament was quite competitive but of course the senior girls badminton team prevailed. We displayed great sportsmanship and most of all, had fun. For the next round, we will train more regularly and hopefully win some matches against Maribynong.

WMR Finals Intermediate Baseball

After destroying the opposition in the first round, our strong intermediate baseball team was unfortunately beset by injuries for the WMR Finals, including losing two outfielders and most devastatingly of all, our champion state pitcher, Tyler. Despite this, the team demonstrated its strong teamwork and knowledge o

Interclub Taekwondo Competition

Our Taekwondo club has yet again experienced success at a tournament. Against 8 other private clubs, we’ve brought back 6 gold medals, 4 silver medals and 5 bronze medals home out of 15 athletes! This time, our students not only succeeded as athletes, they have pushed past and taken up official and coach’s roles. Khoi N, Kevin N and Andy N in Year 11 have represented our club as assistant coaches and Tyson T in Year 11 represented us one of the official referees. I would like to congratulate all the athletes and thank the Year 11s boys for stepping up for the team to assist in smooth running of the competition on the day.

Next stop is President’s Cup and Australian open where three of our students, Yzabella D, Jennifer L and Vivian Nwill travel to Gold Coast to compete against not only the best athletes around Australia but athletes from 20 other countries! Our team is always moving forward and producing results all whilst upholding our school’s ‘renaissance person’ philosophy that is profoundly imbedded in our curriculum.
