Enrolment Applications for 2020 Now Open

Applications to sit the Year 10 and 11 entrance examination for 2020 are now open. As one of just four Selective Entry High Schools in Victoria - and the only one located in Melbourne's West - we understand that there can be a lot of confusion and misinformation surrounding the concept of a selective entry process, and what a school like Suzanne Cory can offer academically gifted young people.

As a current parent of Suzanne Cory, you're well aware of the school's unique learning environment and the opportunities we provide our students, and your actions can have a tremendously positive impact in raising awareness of the school in the wider community.

If you know a family of a bright and enquiring teenager, make sure you let them know that applications for Year 10 and 11 enrolment in 2020 close on Friday, May 31st. Parents can learn more about the enrolment process on our website, and can apply for the exam directly here.

Woolworths Earn & Learn Program

Suzanne Cory is excited to be taking part in the Woolworths Earn & Learn Program! You can help our school by collecting Woolworths Earn & Learn Points when you shop at Woolworths between Wednesday 1st May and Tuesday 25th June 2019. We will redeem these for awesome educational resources for our school. Simply pop them onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and once it is completed, just bring it back to school or drop it into the Collection Box at your local Woolies. The more we collect, the more we can redeem.

There are thousands of products available through the Woolworths Earn & Learn program, and we would like to get lots of new gear! Products in the range include resources for mathematics, English, science, art & crafts, through to sports gear, library supplies and more. We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program. To learn more about the program, click here.

Operation Wallacea | Science Camp 2020

In the last week of Term 2, 2020, Suzanne Cory is offering students the opportunity to participate in real-world scientific research in South Africa. The potential expedition will run for 2 weeks and will be based in iconic big game reserves. Students will learn about conservation efforts and help with biodiversity surveys of large species such as elephants. All students involved must be over the age of 16 at the time of the expedition.

Thank you to all those who made it to the information session on our proposed 2020 South Africa expedition. Sign ups are now open for those interested in attending the expedition. Copies of the sign up letter can be found attached to this post or hardcopies can be collected from Ms Nguyen in the downstairs staff room. Deposits are paid directly to Operation Wallacea at this link. Please note that in the event that the expedition does not run, this deposit is refundable.

The due date for deposits is Friday June 1st. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Dolly Nguyen via email at nguyen.uyen.thy.u@edumail.vic.gov.au

Western Chances Scholarship

Western Chances is a community organisation that provides financially disadvantaged students living in the Western suburbs assistance to cover the cost of school supplies. The scholarship also supports students throughout university.

Suzanne Cory currently has a number of students receiving the scholarship, based on excellent academic results, participation in cocurricular and leadership positions in school, and community involvement.

New applications for the Western Chances Scholarship will open in July. Please check Compass regularly for updates. Mr Taig (Careers Practitioner at SCHS) can assist students to apply for the scholarship.

Teacher’s Reflective Journal on Model United Nations

On Thursday, May 2nd, I had a great opportunity to attend Model United Nations (MUN) event in South Yarra along with our six amazing students.

It is a full-day simulation of UN Assembly. Initially, I have no expectation, though I do have motivation to experience anything new. To me, it is just another day of work. No big deal! However, this experience changes my perception towards excursion events such as this one - how wrong I could be.  That is why I voluntarily wrote this journal to remind me that “never assume” but “to experience”.

My feelings started boiling when I arrived at the Model UN place. I saw all students sitting in the simulation of UN Assembly. Delegates of each country step into the shoes of ambassadors from around the world. The Model UN is more of a student-led conference. They take themselves very seriously. Undoubtedly, our school uniforms just make them prouder of themselves. Occasionally you can hear the sound of a small wooden hammer, which the Chair uses to keep order within a Model UN committee.

During the day, they discussed contentious global issues – with the aim being to find the best possible solution through dialogue, negotiation and multilateral diplomacy. English has always been my working language – my second tongue. It has been my dream to possess strong oratorial skills and be confident among English native speakers. So you can imagine how much I am admiring them. The truth is that, I wish to be 18 again. During the day, I saw many future Prime Ministers.

As an educator, it is a great event for me to have first experience in witnessing how well our students use their language skills in an art form, and demonstrate their knowledge gained from their humanity subjects. I am lucky to teach in a selective entry school where I have met talented students.

Here in my school, I don’t have to teach students; I work with them. They are independent and driven to succeed, willing to go the extra mile.

I sincerely urge our students to take any opportunity that our school has offered each of you – to participate in events like this, to fine-tune your skills and demonstrate what you have learned from our school, last but most importantly, to enjoy your learning.

- Mr. Dave Yan, SCHS Teacher
