Specialists Updates and Celebrations

Messages from our Specialist team (P.E., STEAM, Music and Mandarin)...

P.E.

Prep students came back to school with so much energy! We focussed on teamwork this week. Wow! What caring students we have at SMPS. We attempted 5 new games that all worked on teamwork skills. Students were inclusive, took turns and were helpful, kind and caring. Prep C's favourite game was the Hula Hoop Race. 1 student had to go inside the hula hoop and was not allowed to touch the hoop. The other students in the team all had to hold the hoop and make sure they got the middle student to the other side of the gym. They communicated with each other whether to go faster or slower and listened carefully. Taking turns and not worrying about who went first was a pleasure to see.

Athletics Day has been postponed to Term 4 - Friday, November 12th (Week 6).

STEAM

It's so good to have the kids back at school!

Last week, the Grade 1&2 students watched the video another episode of  the very popular "Hector's World". This is a series about being safe online. Students completed the ‘An important thing for me to remember’ activity as a reminder to always ask an adult before doing anything online and to get help from a trusted adult if anything worries them.

Mandarin

The Grade 3 and 4 students have been learning the names of the special days. This week, we discussed our birthdays! We have been very creative in designing our birthday cards. We also learned how to write ‘Happy Birthday’ in Pinyin as well as Chinese Characters.

Music

Our remote learning Music project was to develop a song for an imaginary video game. The students spent 6 lessons writing their song on an electronic music composition program called BeepBox. They had to think about the style of video game, mood and tone of the game as well as the genre of music they were composing. Students had to make choices and adjustments to suit these parameters. The project had specific guidelines around how many instruments, the song form and the use of specific compositional techniques in each section.

Being back in the Music Room has seen us pick up where we left off on our unit of work on Rock Guitar. Students are learning the history of influential guitarists, classic songs and most importantly, to play some of the most iconic rock riffs on the guitar. Students will take this learning along with applying certain rock guitar playing techniques to develop their own riffs in the coming weeks.
