Next week is Languages Week. This will be preceded by the Gelato Van coming at the end of this week, where students get to practise asking for gelato in Italian.
Parents are also welcome to come to the hall during this week to see examples of student's work in Italian.
Students often ask why they need to learn a foreign language. We say to them that while it is challenging, it is good for their brain. Research shows that it helps them learn the grammar of their mother language better by having the second language to compare it with. Amongst other things, it heightens their perceptual sensitivity, their ability to multitask, improves memory and decision making.
At Burrendah Primary School, we have families who speak 45 different languages. We highly value those languages and encourage families to allow their children to learn both written as well as spoken language at home because we recognise the cognitive advantages that children get from this exposure.
We often have adults say to us that they wish they had have paid more attention in their second language classes at school. It is never too late to start learning a language these days with many digital formats available for flexible learning.
Year 3 and 4 students entered the West Australian Teachers of Italian Association Italian Poster Competition. Year 3 students did a poster about a Pet Shop and Year 4 students did a poster about their typical day.
