Book Week 2021

Get ready for our annual Book Week bonanza

Bookmark these dates on your calendar! Book Week at St Mary's College (Monday 23 August to Friday 27 August) is almost upon us—that exciting time of year where we get to celebrate books on so many levels.

The Children's Book Council of Australia Book Week theme this year is 'Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds', and as K-12 school, St Mary's College chooses to embrace the importance of literacy and reading for learning, as well as pleasure.

Our professional library team knows that it takes our whole school community to ensure this event's success. Thank you in advance for your commitment and support.

Book Week in the Junior School

  • We are privileged to be hosting acclaimed author, Lian Tanner for workshops this year with our Prep to Year 6 classes.
  • There are in-house competitions for students to enter, including colouring-in competitions for K-2, a Book Week quiz for Years 3-4 and badge design challenge for Years 5-6.
  • Our bi-annual book swap is on again! Start going through your bookshelves because in the week prior to Book Week, students can bring in unwanted books that are in excellent condition in exchange for a token per title. These token can be redeemed during Book Week from the donated collection. This is an excellent opportunity to support SMC’s sustainability efforts and update your children's reading collection without spending any money. Keep an eye out for the posters promoting this and the extra reminders, coming soon online.
  • Drop Everything and Read (K-12). We are never too old to enjoy having a story read aloud and students are always keen to get together and share a book.
  • A firm favourite among students and staff, our ever-popular book character dress-up parade will be held once again. Please remember that we encourage creativity and resourcefulness, so borrow, make or reuse any costumes. We are adamant that this not be an expensive, nor stressful event for families.
Unfortunately, due to continued Covid-19 safety protocols, families and friends will again not be permitted on campus to watch the dress-up parades this year. Class teachers will ensure these events are documented and shared with you using the usual classroom online communication platforms.

Book Week in the Senior School
