Remote Learning Tips For Parents Helping At Home

As our students become more familiar with learning from home, there are some things that parents can do at home to help. Here is some basic advice to save your sanity and help your child have their best chance of success learning at home.

1. Set (and keep) a schedule

Check the Home Learning Portal. Know the times your child should be online. Set your family schedule to match this. Use some sort of timer to clarify how much time is being spent on what.

2. Make sure children have any materials necessary to complete all assignments

Whether it's pencil and paper, a stable WiFi connection, iPad or Chromebook (charged!) log-in information for all accounts–whatever they need to get the work done.

3. Provide an environment conducive to learning

This isn’t always easy. If they’re too isolated, it’s difficult to check in with them. If they’re at the kitchen table, depending on the child or their environment, they may be too distracted. This is even more challenging when everyone is home and the house is full.

4. Don’t teach – help them understand

Parents can help their children understand what they need to do but are not expected to be the teachers.  Your child’s teacher is available if help is required. Parents should contact their child's teacher via Seesaw if further assistance is needed.

5. Make sure all work is completed

Check that your child has completed all set tasks for the day.

6. Check messages and communicate with the school

Check for messages daily from teachers and the school. Check your Seesaw account and email account for notifications from Operoo.

7. Encourage a growth mindset

This isn’t about what to learn or how to learn, but rather how to think about what they’re learning. Encourage and model positive thinking for your child. We can do this!
