Tackling Exams

Term 2 can be a highly busy time for all students, but especially for those studying VCE, VCAL and VET subjects at Year 11 and 12 and for the Year 10s tackling exams for the first time. It is important to be aware that while some student may get anxious over exams and assessment, other students may not exhibit signs of strain at all. Either reaction is perfectly normal. However, if you are concerned about your son/daughter’s level of stress, below are some tips to try.

Sleep

  • Teenagers need 9-10 hours of sleep per night
  • Health care professionals advise being screen free for up to 2 hours before bedtime
  • If having issues sleeping try warm milk or a shower before bed
  • Don’t drink caffeinated beverages after 5pm

Health

  • Drink 8 glasses of water a day
  • Eat 3 meals plus snacks each day
  • Breakfast is important to get the brain and body functioning

Exercise

  • Health care professionals advise getting 30 minutes of exercise each day
  • Try walking to and from school
  • Walk the dog, play sport, take an exercise class, do yoga

Wellbeing

  • Ensure you balance your life between study, family, friends and outside interests
  • When studying, make sure you take a break every 40 minutes
  • Try meditation and mindfulness – go to your App store for lots of free apps
  • Reward yourself after an assessment/exam is completed – dinner with the family,  a sweet treat, or watch a favourite movie
