GREENSBOROUGH LAUNCHES THE 2017 AFL GIRLS ACADEMY

After our recent success in Girls AFL across the last few years and the Senior team almost clinching the State Title from Hallam Senior Secondary College in August, the time had come to take our success in Girls AFL to the next level and introduce an AFL professional talent identification program at the College. After months of planning, last week Greensborough College launched the inaugural 2017 Girls AFL Academy- the first of its kind in Northern Metropolitan Melbourne.

The Academy currently has 27 girls signed up from Years 7-11, all from a range of sporting backgrounds. Greensborough College has also aligned with a Victorian State League Club, Diamond Creek Women’s Football Club- the largest female football club in Australia. The club will be offering the Academy support through the use of Plenty Park for squad training, equipment as well as mentoring and support for our Academy members and coaching staff.

The Academy are lucky to have the support from our ex-students in Olivia McFawn, Charley McFawn and Jessica Hardy who have come on board as assistant coaches and Marnie Hay as our Strength and Conditioning Coach.

The Academy will be training in a combination of before school, lunchtime and after school sessions for 2017, with the squad competing in a range of exhibition matches as well as the SSV school competition.

I am confident Greensborough College will soon become the next powerhouse for female football at an interschool level.

Last Monday and Tuesday, the College ran two whole school student Leadership Training days for all of our 2017 College Leaders.

The students participated in a variety of workshops, which included team building activities, leadership seminars, planning workshops and a question and answer session with two of our ex-Year 12 House Captains, Carly Lesha and Ashlea Melnikas.

The Year 8, 9 and 10 College Leaders were also involved in the planning and running of House activities for our new Year 7’s on the Grade 6 Induction Day, which were a huge success!

The Leadership Training days allowed the students to get to know their various groups for 2017 and begin to plan the road to success for next year. It was also a chance to show off our brand new House logos and singlets- officially launching the new look 2017 Student Leadership Program.

I wish to congratulate all students for their mature approach to the two days and for the hard work they put into all sessions.

Bring on 2017!
