Annabel Hetherington (Year 11) - RIST Graduation

On Monday night our Rural Industries Skills Training (RIST) students gathered in the Performing Arts Centre to celebrate the graduation of Certificate II in Agriculture. RIST has been a fun and educational experience for our Year 11 boarder Annabel Hetherington and has allowed her to broaden her horizons in the agricultural field whilst also present opportunities for early career advancement.

Annabel has been involved with RIST for a year studying Certificate II in Agriculture. Every Tuesday after school Annabel would travel out to RIST (about 10kms from Hamilton), and study online tasks and practical assessments. At least once a month she would have be required to attend either RIST or a farm to complete a range of applied practical skills. For example, she has travelled to Hawkesdale for a chainsaw course and Dunkeld for a cattle handling course.

Annabel has now begun a Certificate III in Agriculture, and will complete this throughout the year. Following your passion at College can be achieved in any area of life, and for our future farming industry if we have young aspiring graduates such as Annabel, I think we are in good hands. Well done Annabel and all the very best in becoming a leader in the industry.

Riley Edwards - Following Your Passions

All of our boarders have a passion of some sort and, at times, these passions are quite unique. Riley Edwards (Year 10) is dedicated to serve the armed forces one day as an engineer and he is well on his way to do so. With the assistance of the Byrne family and in particular our Year 12 student Baxter Byrne, Riley has been able to enter the world of Army Cadets. Army Cadets acts as an experience, similar to the armed forces, whereby adolescents are able to learn a range of skills, develop confidence and make friends along the way. Last weekend Riley was fortunate to attend a Bivouac in central Victoria where cadets from all over Victoria gathered. Riley is just one of our boarders who has found their life-long passion and is eager to jump into this at any stage. Well done Riley and all the best for Cadets this year and your career in the Army.

Welcome to One of Our Many Weekly Casual Boarders - Hunter Lynch (Yr 7)

Hunter Lynch (Year 7) has recently decided to do some casual boarding and is loving every minute of it. Hunter’s family live a busy life and with all of the driving in and out of town with family commitments it does at times make it a challenge for Hunter to get to some sporting games of an evening. Casual boarding hence became a logical choice for one night a week. Not only does the casual boarding help Hunter get to his Basketball game each week, it is also a time where he is able to knuckle down and receive some assistance with his homework. For Hunter’s family, boarding has also been a choice to encourage the development of those important life-skills of organisation, independence and confidence. Hunter has not looked back in making the smooth transition into boarding, his positive mindset and give-it-a-go attitude is so impressive. Congratulations Hunter on taking a big step into boarding life.

Casual Boarding

Have you ever considered casual boarding? With our after-school programs in full-swing and our day school students taking these opportunities with determination our Boarding Houses can offer a comfortable place for an evening or two. When a casual boarder finishes their after-school commitment they are able to be picked up by our driver and brought back to the Boarding House. Here they enjoy dinner, academic assistance, super supper (on a Wednesday), a warm and comfortable bed for the night with breakfast and lunch the following day. Casual boarding is becoming a popular choice for families and their children of all ages, and I encourage any family to consider this option for their son or daughter.

If you would like to trial boarding, experience the benefits of casual boarding or simply enquire about boarding in general please do not hesitate to contact Susie Holcombe (holcombes@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au) or myself (amonk@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au or 0407 052 214).
