S.T.E.M. Project

Ms. Simone Brabham and Ms. Sophie Ross are participants in an exciting professional learning project funded by the Invergowrie Foundation, whose mission is the educational advancement of girls and women in Victoria, and who have focused their attentions for the short-term future on improving opportunities for girls in STEM in particular. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Ms. Brabham pilots our Junior School digital technologies programs and is undertaking university study in this area. This week Ms. Ross and Ms. Brabham commenced the first two days of a professional learning course aimed at increasing STEM opportunities for primary aged students.  We look forward to the ideas and initiatives they will bring back.

Learning Progress Meetings and Term One Interim Reports

On March 17th and 18th, all Junior School teachers Prep to Year Six will conduct three-way learning progress meetings. This is an opportunity for parents to discuss their child’s start to the 2020 academic year and to set collaborative learning goals. Whilst S.M.A.R.T goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely) have been a way to set goals for many years, an interesting addition is the letter ‘I’ in front of S.M.A.R.T. The ‘I’ stands for inspiring. Goals need to be inspiring and underpinned by intrinsic motivation. Parents, students and teachers will all contribute goals at these meeting.  Parents will receive an interim report in the final week of term. This report will assess learning behaviours and list the goals set at the learning progress meetings. Mrs. Povey will be taking bookings over the coming weeks. Ten-minute time slots are available from 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm.  Skype meetings may be arranged for parents living out of Hamilton.

Tennis

Of the 24 tennis players entered in the recent Hamilton and District Sports Association Tennis Championships, 19 hailed from The Hamilton and Alexandra College Junior School.  Our students played wonderful games of tennis all day.  Each set was played to the best of four games and our students were all very competitive and could score and manage their sets independently.  Positive sportsmanship, tennis etiquette and expressing positive attributes of our opponents was the order of the day and our players all shone on this front – I was very proud to be supporting them all.

Huge congratulations to Charlie Jarvis, Harry McDonald and Chloe Laidlaw who qualified for the upcoming SSV Division Tennis Championships.  Good Luck!

Swimming

Congratulations to Sophie Satchell, Yolanda O’Sullivan, George Nicholls, Harry McDonald, Thomas Templeton, Harry Mercer, Andreas Mikulic, Ruby Hausler, Jack Mann, Molly Walker, Sarah Crowle, Will Baker, Sophie Spence, Taylor Haley and Belle Wallis who have all qualified to compete at the SSV Division Swimming Championships at the Aquazone complex in Warrnambool on Friday 13th March.  Best of luck to our 2020 swimming team!

House Athletics Day - Friday 28th February, 2020

We are all very much looking forward to our House Athletics Carnival to be held this Friday.  I thank Mr Andrew Monk, Mr Philip Baulch, Mr Wal Dyer and Mrs Jane Young for their assistance in volunteering to mark the lines on our oval this week, and to Mr Jim Bailey and Monivae College for the loan of their line marker.  Your contribution to our event is greatly appreciated.

Throughout the carnival, all students have the opportunity to compete in all events within their age-group and parents, relatives and friends are warmly invited to join us in cheering on our students on the day.

The Athletics Carnival aims to foster positive attitudes towards participation, positive sportsmanship and competition.   It will also be an opportunity for our new House Captains to lead their Houses.  On the day, a House Cup will be presented, along with Championship Medals for one boy and one girl in each of the 9, 10, 11 and 12/13 year old age groups.  These medals are in recognition of particular achievement in track and field for the day.  Teachers will also be on the lookout for students who display attributes in line with the Liam Picken Award.

As always, we rely on parental help in order to run both our track and field events.  Please contact Mrs. Povey if you are able to assist, or speak to me on the day if you become available.

Lunches:

Thank you so very much to Megan Mould and her merry band of parents of the Junior School who are again providing a sausage sizzle, cakes, drinks and icy-poles on the day.

Sausages are $2 each

Icy-poles, drinks & cupcakes are $1 each.

There will be no lunch orders available on this day and students are reminded to bring money for the sausage sizzle or to bring their packed lunch.

Safety:

Children will be required to have sunscreen and a hat before they will be able to participate in events on this day.  They will also need a couple of drink bottles.

Uniform:

Students must wear PE uniform with House polo top to school for the day.
