Library

Reading:
This is such an important skill. If you give one thing to your children make it the gift of reading aloud to them. Read what they are reading. Share what you read when you were their age. Our English faculty is continuing to work as a Community of Practice, with expert Mary Mason, on how to encourage all students to read more books, read differently, and read often. This work will enable the Library to better support English reading lessons and encourage some risk taking in terms of choice, length and depth.
To encourage younger readers we have been publishing book reviews by one of our prolific Year 5 students who reads across a range of genres. Her latest set of reviews is on our blog here.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge – the end is nigh:
Next week, the 17 -23 August is Children's Book Council of Australia Book Week. The winners of the books of the year will be announced and some will rejoice while others mourn! Keep your eyes on the Junior School Newsletter for event information. (Sadly I will be on leave and miss the festivities).
Not long afterwards on the 6th of September the Premiers' Reading Challenge ends. This Challenge online application closes. No data can be entered after this date.
All data must be entered well before this date and your support in logging your child’s/ or childrens’ books as soon as possible will be appreciated. Mr Jarran Cook will be assisting with the sign off for us. You can email him at jcook@hamiltoncollege.vic.edu.au. In the meantime, please send a message to your child’s class teacher stating that the books logged have been read. This will enable us to verify anything read before the website closes for this year. Well done to those families who have supported this program.
Farewell until next term:
I am taking the last 5 weeks of this term as long service leave. The bulk of my work will be covered by Mrs Erin Parker. If you see her in the Library or working with Year 5 or Year 6 please make her welcome. She is an excellent teacher and very focussed on positive student learning outcomes. I may see you in the shops, at the saleyards or somewhere more exotic and plan to return refreshed at the start of Term 4.
