Well done to Year 12 student Harris Jennings who has been awarded a place in the initial Victoria Country Under 18 Football squad. Harris has earned his position in the team through his consistent performances so far this season for the Greater Western Rebels TAC Cup Under 18 side. All the best Harris during the selection process.

The HKJFA season began on Sunday in warm conditions at Pedrina Park with both College Magpies sides recording comfortable victories. The Under 16 side defeated St. Mary’s Monivae Kokoda 143 -14 with a dominant second half performance.

ICCES Athletics

The athletics team has begun training with our coach Rohan Garfoot this week in preparation for our ICCES Carnival on Thursday 10th May at Albert Park Lakeside stadium in Melbourne. Information has gone out to all the competitors and parents/guardians via CARE MONKEY already. Girls who are in sprinting events may also want to visit the uniform shop before the event and purchase some of the new navy school shorts to wear at this carnival.

Team App

These have been set up for many our sports so far for this current season and are a great way to get instant notifications and messages on smartphones or iPad about what is happening in the sport. Players and/or parents should get an email from the head of sport or coach setting them up and then can request to join. Boys' Hockey

The new season commenced in fine weather last weekend and the two Division 2 (the old boys’ Under 16 level but with a few over-age players permitted in each team) sides commenced the year well.

Mrs Nichols’ College Blue team enjoyed a goal-fest against Monivae, eventually tallying 13 and conceding none. Ferg Roberts (4), Euan Sutherland (3), Max Green (3), Harrison Hocking, Eren Zehir and Tane Nelson found the net. Given that, of these, only Tane had not just got off the plane from China, we should anticipate further improvement as the skills fully return! The boys played splendidly, working together well and displaying several moments of fine hockey. This team should enjoy a very good season.

I enjoyed looking after Mrs Winter Cooke’s Gold team so that she could have the weekend off after her travels to China. This is, largely, a younger team, and the boys enjoyed a closely contested match against Demons/Coleraine. Goals from Jack Austin and parent David Merrin, one of our approved over-age players, saw the boys record a 2-0 victory. Again, there were pleasing signs of team play evident; at times, things did not quite click with skill errors, over-enthusiasm and misunderstandings causing some turn-overs, but this team should develop very well as the year progresses.

The Open team faced a bigger challenge – a Grand Final re-match against Bulls with seven of our team new to the squad since last September’s game. The contest was, as was expected, fiercely fought and the boys did very well to withstand the strong early pressure applied by our opponents. Both sides were short of a run but the game ebbed and flowed and a fine Tane Nelson goal midway through the second half put us ahead. Bulls were able to score twice before the whistle and, on the play, deserved their win but the boys showed we have much to look forward to as the season progresses.

The Open team plays again on Friday night and the Division 2 boys play again, as usual, on Saturday morning. It is good to have the season underway!

Girls' Hockey

It did not feel like the start of the hockey season on Friday night with warm conditions greeting all teams. It was wonderful to see all our players back in action and great to see so many new faces as well.

The weekend kicked off with the A Grade Thundersticks recording a 2-1 win against Coleraine Black. It was certainly a rusty start with the girls taking some time to find their groove. Phoebe Sweeney who was probably best on ground was the first to score. Coleraine hit back shortly after with the game evenly poised at 1-1 at half time. College took control of the second half and a great goal to Nina Pern on the post mid-way through the second half was enough to give College their first win of the season. Better players were Phoebe Sweeney, Beth White, Lily McCure and Hannah Nichols.

The reigning premiers College Strikers again proved they will be the team to beat this year with a strong 4-0 victory over Dunkeld. College dominated right from the start. Hannah Russell was everywhere and will be the player to stop this season. Madi Mutch also had a great start to her season scoring two goals and Shayleigh Ingelse also scored. Olivia Allen and Erin Powell were amongst the better players.

Our two B Grade teams had mixed success on Sunday. The B Grade Blades were defeated 3-0 by Monivae but they certainly had their chances. This is a very young side and, under the guidance of Beth White, they should improve considerably. It was great to welcome Julia Howells back to the College as Goalie. Jordy Brown and Bridget Delany were the better players.

The Scorchers had a 0-0 draw against Demons. One would have to ask why the “older” member of the team enjoyed a gentle stretching session when the students were all warming up doing laps and run throughs! Despite lots of chances nobody troubled the scorer in this match. Di Austin, Emily Crawford and Lucy Roberts were named amongst the best.
