Teacher - Drama

The Year 7 Drama students have been exercising their considerable creative skills!

The class recently undertook a process drama, based on a gruesome retelling of the children's classic fairytale,  Little Red Riding Hood.  This process sees the students use a text as a starting point to embody a range of characters to gain better insight into the story. They discuss and explore issues and ideas of what characters might think or feel in order to gain a better holistic understanding of its characters and themes.

This activity is designed so that students can learn skills for how to research characters that they may need to portray and to encourage their initiative and talent for writing and staging performances. The class broke into smaller groups to work on writing, directing, costuming and casting their play,  and were free to adapt the storyline, dialogue and characters as they chose.   Their work resulted in the development of some very creative and amusing performances. Each group performed their sketches within class time in front of their fellow classmates and it was great to see them so supportive and appreciative of each group's work.  The class tackled the activity wholeheartedly: the costuming efforts were especially good, everyone got involved in the process from beginning to end, and the performances were delivered with great enthusiasm.

The whole experience was both enlightening and very entertaining - these students are a fabulous addition to the BSC Performing Arts program!

Audience

We really enjoyed watching these drama performances! The students really took on their roles - and there were a lot of funny moments in all the sketches.  We were impressed that they were all very comfortable in the class and confident in their approach to performance - and especially pleased that they were so encouraging to each other.

Thank you for inviting us!
