INCY AND HELENA TAKE GOLD AT PC4G
On 11 November two of our year 9 Coding girls, Incy Lin and Helena Huang, travelled to Melbourne University to compete in the Programming Challenge 4 Girls. This event run by the Engineering School at Melbourne University introduced the students to a free programming environment called Alice before setting the teams a challenge to complete on their own by lunchtime. Alice is a 3D graphical world and the students had to create a given storyboard before completing their story in their own way.
There were about 40 teams competing - mostly from independent schools - and our team, named the Pineapples, were one of a few teams who were awarded a Gold Medal. Well done, girls!
Incy and Helena both said they enjoyed the day and would recommend girls next year also getting involved.
YEAR 7s MEET THE CAT
All Year 7 IT classes are starting their foray into computer programming using the Scratch environment online from MIT. They all start with a central cat figure and learn to move it, change its colour, change its appearance and provide an interesting background. This is all leading to their understanding of the three main control structures in computer programming: sequence, selection and iteration.
So far, they all seem to be enjoying being in control!
