Young Archie Competition

Koonung  student Joana Goi (7F) has created a wonderful self-portrait and entered the Young Archie Award 2020.

The Young Archie competition invites budding artists between the ages of 5 and 18 to submit a portrait. As well as online, all finalists are displayed at the Art Gallery of NSW held in conjunction with the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes exhibition. To be a part of the prestigious Young Archie shows great dedication as a young artist. Joana has showed great skill in her self-portrait using the charcoal medium to full effect with tonal variations and soft blending to create her realistic artwork. Well done Joana, we wish you the best in the competition!

Arts Space News - Classical drawing in Still Life

Arts Space is a student art group at Koonung and runs at lunch time on Thursdays in Room 35 - all students are welcome at any time! Beginners are always welcome!

If you wish to explore more about the wonderful world of art, then come along to Arts Space, facilitated by Art Teacher, Sandy Angliss.

Currently in Arts Space we are exploring classical drawing methods in Still Life - we have been looking at the beautiful shape of the humble pear.

Students have been learning about and practising 'Gesture' drawing and 'Contour' drawing.

In 'Gesture' drawing,  students have been practising to see the pears as a whole, and to get a drawing down on paper with-in 5 seconds - it is amazing what we can all achieve in 5 seconds!  I then increased the drawing time to 20 seconds, one minute and one minute and 30 seconds. These rapid fire drawings are of course loose and free, as the time limit to draw is so short. This exercise helps to strengthen the students eye-hand coordination and to see the 'Still life' as a whole.

'Contour' drawing is very different to 'Gesture' drawing, but also very important to learn and experience as young artists in the making.  'Contour' drawing is a very slow and methodical way of deeply observing the 'outline' or the 'contours' of an object.

All students have been applying themselves to these drawing methods, with great maturity. They have all created authentic and honest drawings! Well done team!

In the next few weeks, we will begin to explore form and colour and create drawings of "Still Life with pears" with soft pastels on paper.

We will be looking at the still-lives artworks of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne for inspiration.

See you in the Arts Space - remember - all welcome, anytime!
