More about OY Launceston:

Join the program over five sessions to learn about some of the amazing aquatic ecosystems right on our doorsteps, and learn new digital storytelling skills to bring your experience to life on the screen.

  • Session one: We kick things off with a  professional digital storytelling workshop with Gaia Discovery, who will teach us how to create an engaging video with shooting, interviewing and editing tips.
  • Session two: We head to the Seahorse World in Beauty Point to learn about some of the truly spectacular aquatic species that live in the kanamaluka / Tamar estuary, before heading across to the Platypus House where the fun continues.
  • Session three: The Tamar Island Wetlands is one of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems along the kanamaluka, we visit the Parks and Wildlife Service team to learn about the wetlands and the creatures that live there. PLUS we'll be joined by Wallaby Walkabout Tours for a cultural workshop with activities such as doing art using ochre to paint on paperbark, fire making using the friction method, and making small huts from paperbark and sticks. All the while learning how Tasmania's first people and traditional owners lived on, cared for and interacted with the estuary.
  • Session four: Armed with our new knowledge of our local aquatic ecosystems, we take a look at one of the threats to the future of these ecosystems - plastic, rubbish and waste. Led by Plastic Free Launceston, we'll learn about the impacts of this threat and how we can all do our part to get rid of rubbish out of our waterways.
  • Session five: time to wrap up the OY experience! During excursions, participants were tasked with creating their own short film using the digital storytelling skills gained from Gaia Discovery in session one. In this final session, we'll be showcasing our short films in front of family and friends in a celebration of our aquatic habitats, species, and the people that work with them!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • All participants must attend all five sessions (unless unwell).
  • All participants must bring: a smart phone or camera for filming at each excursion, lunch, water, and appropriate outerwear.
  • All participants are expected to create a short film using footage collected during excursions.
  • All participants must follow Government COVID requirements, including following close-contact rules.
  • All participants must be accompanied by an adult.

Circle Of Security Program term 4

Speech Pathology Tasmania warmly invites all caregivers to join Rosie Martin for the Circle Of Security Program. The term 4 program will take place on Tuesday evenings from Oct 25 to Dec 13. The course involves meeting in a small group online via zoom once a week for 8 sessions, at times when children are likely to be asleep.

The Foster and Kinship Carers Association of Tasmania will sponsor Tasmanian grandparents raising grandchildren, informal kin, and Foster & Kinship Carers to participate. A group specifically for foster carers will be also running in term 4 on Wednesdays at 10:30am-12:30pm from Oct 26 to Dec 14.

This enriching non-judgmental program explores the development of connection, relationship and attachment – which are also the foundations for language and social skills development and good mental health for carers and children. The insights gained can benefit all relationships.

Numbers are limited to keep the group small. The zoom format is convenient for busy families. The video segments and handouts are helpful for visual learners.

Fostering Hope Mentoring Program

Fostering Hope is a community organisation whose work comes from the Bible and the teachings of Jesus to ‘visit’ and ‘care for’ orphans and widows, to put the lonely in families, to love the fatherless, to care for children, and to love the neighbours in the communities. Through our Mentoring Program, we seek to provide a “friend with purpose” for kids in care. If you are looking for a way to live out your faith in caring for those in need, you can make a difference for a child in care. We would love to talk with you about how we can equip you with training, connect you with a child and provide you with ongoing support as you mentor. With just a few hours a month, you can significantly impact the life of a child in care for the better.

We have our next training day on Saturday, October 1

Find out more or apply @ https://www.fosteringhope.community/mentoring, or reach out to Ellie (ellie@fosteringhope.community).
