French Focus

Bonjour à tous!

It has been a very busy few weeks in the French room!

A Celebration of Culture, Food and the Arts

Students in Years 5 and 6 have recently completed their French inquiry projects. They have worked exceptionally hard on these projects with many children electing to work on them at home and during lunchtimes at Catch Up French.

On Monday, 22 August, the French room was transformed into a French Gallery! The projects were then on display for the remainder of the week for students across the school to explore. These projects have provided a platform for students in Year 5 and 6 to research and present their knowledge about an aspect of French culture and identity. Students were assessed on the accuracy of their information, the inclusion of a bilingual dictionary, bibliography and their creativity. These projects also provided students with an opportunity to reflect on what the different projects tell us about French culture and identity, such as the importance of the arts and the popularity of ‘le football’, not so much AFL!

The inquiry projects have also provided a wonderful opportunity for younger students, who have been so inspired by the work of our older students. Children across the school have learned about French fashion, sport, architecture, art, cuisine and history through the work of the students in Years 5 and 6. Some of the highlights for younger students included watching La Marseillaise performed on the violin by one of our Year 5 students and exploring an ‘operational’ guillotine… the poor Lego figure never saw it coming!

See the reactions of the younger students as they view the gallery for the first time.

The Foundation students reflect upon what they have see in the gallery.

Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition

On Sunday, 21 August, five of our Year 4 students participated in the final of the Alliance Française Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition.

This competition involves learning a French poem by heart and then reciting it to an examiner at the Alliance Française. The examiners assess students on a range of criteria including their knowledge of the selected poem, pronunciation and effort.

Only students who achieved a perfect score in the first round of the competition qualify to participate in the final - félicitations!

Congratulations to Alex C, Taylor C, Rylee D, Joel H and Billy M!

Félicitations!
Félicitations!

As always, please feel free to pop into the French room if you have any questions, or just to say ‘Bonjour’!

à bientôt
