Go Girl Event

As part of our unit on “Express Yourself” the Year 5 and 6 Girls were invited to attend the “Go Girl Go for IT”,  fun, free 1-day technology conference on Thursday August 19th. Over 1700 students from Years 5-10 attended the conference.

(Famous women who were and are leaders in Technology)

The one-day event focused on inspiring students with fantastic role model speakers, showcasing technology of the future and challenging any preconceptions of what a career in IT might look like. It opened up the possibilities of following careers in everything from analysis to user design to development to data science (just to name a few!).

The day began with a keynote speaker who challenged the girls to think about design, writing, creativity and teamwork. We then listened to April speak about

Tinkercad, which is a free web app used for 3D design, electronics and coding.

We explored the Trade Show which showcased the many opportunities available to girls when choosing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Our show bags were filled with many gifts and giveaways provided by various companies.

Our final workshop highlighted how students can develop apps which may help to overcome some of the problems faced by our world. We learnt about the tech girl movement where girls are encouraged to be superheroes. This is the link for further information on this topic https://www.techgirlsmovement.org/.
