Instrumental Music

To all parents,

I want you to consider the possibility of your child learning a musical instrument.

Learning to play an instrument and making music is so good for our mental/emotional health. It improves our mood and releases dopamine which in turn stimulates endorphins causing us to feel happy for prolonged periods of time. Learning an instrument also builds our self-esteem, teaches us to cope with challenges, and builds or capacity to be resilient. Finally, it strengthens connections with others, makes our brains stronger and helps them learn, and increases our ability to be spontaneous. Get out there and start playing, it’s so good for you.

Learning to play a musical instrument can enhance fine and gross motor movements and coordination skills and foster a greater capacity for memory and social skills interactions and self-expression. Learning a musical instrument introduces skills that your child will take with them for life!

  1. Music helps train the brain
  2. Music helps with learning
  3. Music helps build patience
  4. Music builds a sense of responsibility
  5. Music can build self-esteem

We live in a technological time that has created a multilevel of distractions for all of society and in particular, children.

This is one of the most challenging aspects that both parents and educational institutions need to address.  One strategy that parents might consider is learning a musical instrument as opposed to their child mastering a video game.

Music is highly complex language.  Playing of an instrument can take a lifetime to master and can also provide a means of self-expression and creativity.

Learning a musical instrument for its own sake does not need to be linked to classroom music, but both will form a solid foundation.

As a musician I find great solace in my wellbeing when I play my instrument.  My instrument will always be waiting for me.  It does not question my moods or infrequent returns.  Like a best friend...who will always understand.

Further information about the instrumental music programs on offer at the College can be found on our website.  Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions.
