Why do we Celebrate Wear it Purple?
At its core, Wear it Purple Day is about supporting LGBTQIA+ youth.
In 2010, a number of tragic, avoidable cases of bullying and harassment resulted in a number of LGBTQIA+ youth taking their own lives. These tragedies resulted in public outcry, and outpouring of support for queer young people.
Wear It Purple Day was started to make sure all rainbow young people know that they are loved, accepted and that there is a place for them to feel safe, included and empowered.
It's been a challenging year for queer youth – the fact that 66% of LGBTQIA+ young people in Australia will experience harassment as a result of their identity just speaks to the work that still needs to be done to build LGBTQIA+ inclusion. But to see entire communities standing out in support of queer youth? It's incredibly impactful!
98% of the folks we asked about celebrating Wear it Purple Day in 2021 said that getting involved had a positive impact on their organisation AND 74% said their activity sparked ongoing (that's the important bit) LGBTQIA+ inclusion initiatives.
Will you be joining us, and making this our biggest Wear it Purple Day yet?
