The Arts

In this Grammar News, we would like to celebrate two occasions of which our students were extremely proud.

Firstly, Senior School students were able to participate in the Hellenic Arts Gala organised by our school and St John’s College in Preston. Students participated in a series of Greek Dancing, Music and Art activities. A mosaic was created with the crests of the two schools with the help of a local Artist. Students also enjoyed a wonderful evening of fun and dancing, which highlighted the evening.

Secondly, portraiture Artist George Petrou has been working with our Year 6 and 7 students on creating a series of works inspired by his work. These will be presented at the annual Arts Show in November. We look forward to the work they will create.

News from the Art Rooms

Preps- Our little artists had fun creating rainbows and learning about texture in art.

Year 1- Students completed the Unit titled Minibeasts, with vibrant 3D Butterflies made out of coloured playdough. They learnt about the Art Element of Form.

Year 2- Students created abstract portraits inspired by the great Spanish art Master, Pablo Picasso. They are now working on a new theme Colourful Cats in watercolour medium, applying the same Cubist technique.

Year 3- Students have been introduced to a new Austrian artist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser. He is well known for his organic, vivid style in painting, printmaking and architecture. His work gives equal attention to form, colour and line, and makes strong statements about humanitarianism and environmentalism. Students escaped into a world of dreams and wishes via their art activity.

Year 4- Students completed their art projects inspired by famous Pop artist, Andy Warhol. They have learnt about the Pop Art movement in Art History. The highlight of the Unit was trying the new brush posca pens!

Year 5- Students explored English artist David Hockney and the iPad app 'Brushes Redux' in depth. They applied a variety of brush options, colours, and line densities to create the desired effect on the theme, ‘Flowers like Hockney.’ Some students created landscapes and tried to depict perspective, using the techniques used by the old masters!

Year 9- Students proudly demonstrated their command over handling tones with pencil shading techniques by completing the ‘Detailed Eye’ project.
