VCAL Learning Area

CRC Gold

In our VCAL Personal Development class, we had been studying the process of bee keeping and running a business. Our Principal, Brendan, was aware of this and provided us with the opportunity of having our own bees here at school and selling our honey running our own business. We then started to research what we would need to keep our bees at school and make our business as successful as possible. With this information we proposed our business idea to Brendan and Chantelle who thought that our business would be really successful and provided us with our budget that we were given. This budget included the cost of the bee hives, the honey jars, the bee suits and most importantly the bee keeping course. Our class will be participating in a bee keeping course to ensure that we all remain safe whilst the bees are on the premises. This course allows us to learn how to remove the honey out of the hives, without causing any harm or stress to the bees and ourselves.

Using the money that our honey business will make, one third of the profit will go towards our East Timor Trip, one third to the school and another third to our class for all our work. Our honey will be advertised in the school newsletter, local newspapers and our school website. We will also be selling our honey at our school bakery as well as trying to raise awareness for our business at Watergardens. Our class will take on this project for the remainder of the year and also as our personal development project for year 12. Next year, when our time at the college is coming to an end, we will combine with a year 11 class and provide them with the same training that we have, to ensure that this business can keep running effectively after we leave.

We are all very excited about this new project and can’t wait to see how much our business grows!
