LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library

The term is winding down quickly and this week we are finishing our study of fiction and non-fiction books across all stages. We have learnt the features of these texts, how to distinguish the books we are reading and where they are located in the library. I was very excited last week when a Kinder student told me I was reading a fiction book before I even asked! We have learnt a lot so far this term.

Refugee Week

Over the past week, we have been reading the beautiful ‘My Grandma’s Treasured Shoes’ by Coral Vass for Reguee Week. It is a story about a grandmother whose favourite shoes (amongst oodles of others) are her old shoes she wore when she escaped Vietnam after the war. The story uses shoes to represent the changes and new opportunities grandma experiences when she begins her new life in Australia. With the younger students, we have been discussing the difference between refugees and migrants and what it would feel like to leave everything special to us behind. Older students have been using the Refugee Week 2019 website to research interesting refugee statistics, particularly noting where our refugees come from and how Australia’s intake of refugees compares to other countries around the world. Please ask your child what they found out, they were as surprised as I was about a lot of it, but we also were reminded of the fortunate life we have in Australia.

Save the Date - Scholastic Book Fair Weeks 2 and 3, Term 3

This year we are excited to announce a new way to enjoy good books by hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in week 2 and 3 of term three. The theme is 'Dino-Mite Book Fair: Stomp, Chomp and Read!'. Please note that this IS NOT in book week, which will be held in week 5 when the CBCA Book of the Year winners are announced. The Book Fair coincides with Education Week across NSW and we hope that it starts the build-up of anticipation (and preparation) for the book dress up parade which will be held in week 5 (further details will come early next term). A large collection of quality literature will be provided by Scholastic and there will be opportunities for students and families to visit and purchase these great books (this year we will even have EFTPOS!). So stay tuned for more exciting news about these term three events, I can’t wait!

PRC Reading Superstars

We have two more fantastic readers who have finished their Premier's Reading Challenge, keep reading, the challenge closes on the 31st August 2019.

Book Club Orders

Term 2 book club orders were submitted last week and will hopefully arrive by the end of this week or early next week and will be distributed once we receive them. Thanks again for your generous support of this program, it provides invaluable resources for our library.

2019 CBCA Shortlist - Picture Book of the Year

This week, we are previewing the Picture Book of the Year nominees, which I’m looking forward to reading with our students' next term. Entries in this category should be outstanding books of the Picture Book genre in which the author and illustrator achieve artistic and literary unity or, in wordless picture books, where the story, theme or concept is unified through illustrations. Ages 0-18 years (NB. some of these books may be for mature readers).

Overdue Books

Reminder - please remember to return any overdue library books by the end of term, if you cannot find them, send a note in with your child so I can remove them from their record. If your child would like to borrow some extra books for the holidays, please also let me know so we can organise this during their library lesson next week. Thank you for your help finding any overdue books.

Happy reading,

Mrs Fraser
