Year 7 Vaccinations in 2017

The Secondary School Vaccine Program offers free vaccines to Year 7 students. These vaccines provide protection against:

·         Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) – one dose

·         Human Papillomavirus (HPV) – three doses

·         Varicella (chicken pox) – one dose

Year 7 students received the vaccine consent card booklet in their Learning To Learn class on the first day of school. Parents need to read the booklet and complete and return Part A regardless of whether your child is being vaccinated at school.

This is to be done before Monday 20th February.

Please return Part A cards to the front office.

The Greater Shepparton City Council immunisation service may contact you about the Secondary School Vaccine Program. Schools are authorised to provide basic parent/guardian contact details to local councils for this purpose. Contact the school by 28 February 2017 if you do not want your contact details given to the Greater Shepparton City Council immunisation service.

House Captain Induction Day

On Wednesday 2nd February, the 16 House Captains took part in an induction day over at the Hub. It was a fantastic day, with some great development taking place and highlighted by the presentation from our guest speaker, Rob McCartney. Rob is the current principal of Guthrie St PS and in the previous two years has held the role of Head of Development at the amazingly successful and brilliant Hawthorn Football Club. He was able to pass on firsthand knowledge of the leadership characteristics of Alistair Clarkson and Luke Hodge which was absolutely invaluable. Further to this, the captains developed personal and house goals, explored what it is to be a successful leader, developed their own leadership definition and profile, gained a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities and built their House Captain teams. The feedback from the students on the day was excellent. They are now revved up a ready to lead their respective houses throughout the year, so everyone can look forward to a motivated and excited group of leaders.

Keys Please Program

All our Year 10 students will be participating in the VicRoads Keys Please presentation, to be held in our school during the next three weeks.

Keys Please is an essential component of our school’s personal development program and is the first stage of the Shepparton Secondary Schools Ready to Drive program.

This session will help to make the learning to drive process easier and help to make your child a safer driver. There are strict rules about learning to drive. Attending Keys Please will help ensure your child understands and meets the new requirements.

This program will provide information about how to get your “L’s”, how to fill out the LOG BOOK correctly as well as plenty of tips on getting the 120 hours of supervised driving practice.

There will be a special Keys Please presentation held on Tuesday 21st March, commencing at 7 pm, in the Wanganui Park Secondary College staffroom for interested parents and/or supervising drivers.

As parents will usually be the main supervising driver for their son/daughter, it is important to be aware of their role in the driver training process. Tips for reducing stress between learner and supervising driver will be offered and there will be plenty of time for questions.

For more information contact your school.

Second Hand Uniform

Do you have any GIRLS SCHOOL UNIFORM DRESSES in the bottom of your cupboards?

We have had many enquiries from new students for second hand dresses and would really appreciate any donations to help our families.

Please leave donations at the main office. Many thanks for the boy’s uniforms that have already been dropped off.

Technology - Parent Information Session

On Tuesday 31st of January, Year 7 parents were invited to attend the iPad information night held in the Senior Learning Centre. Over 100 parents attended and were given an insight as to the why and how of some of the basics of iPad use.

Topics included setting restrictions, parental controls, family sharing, restricting screen time and technology-free bedrooms. This is hopefully the beginning of a series of iPad nights where parents can get some tips and tricks to help their child use their technology wisely and ensure that they are “Ready To Learn”.

A copy of the PowerPoint Presentation and additional notes will be available on the school website.

NEXT INFORMATION SESSION:  “HOW TO XUNO” Thursday 16th February 7:30 in the Staffroom.

This session is designed for any parent who wants to know how to use the XUNO Parent Portal.
