Banyule Youth Summit

Macleod students were invited to attend the Banyule Youth Summit, which brought together young people to discuss topics that matter most to them. On the agenda were discussions around mental health, the environment, gender equality, racism, toxic masculinity, cultural diversity, LGBTQIAP+, equality and issues specific to Somali-Australian young people. Students were able to meet like-minded young people in the local area, to present ideas to the local government. This gave our students power, and a safe space to voice their concerns, and the changes they’d like to see in the community. Here are some anecdotes from our attendees:

The Banyule Youth Summit was on the 25 May. Students from the schools in the Banyule area came together to discuss ideas on serious issues around the community. These ideas are used to help better the community through the voice of young people of today. Some of the topics were masculinity, Body image, and LQGBT+.

At the Banyule Youth Summit, I was thrilled to get the opportunity to go, and make friends. I learnt new things, and had fun. I loved how everyone gets a say and that voices are heard, and how even though I didn’t know anyone there, we still talked as a community. There was a lot of nice food, activities, and it was great overall. I LOVED the Banyule Youth Summit!

The Banyule Youth Summit was a very beneficial event. We learnt so many things, and I conquered my fear of public speaking and spoke about things we’d like the community to provide for young Somali people, and the programs and potential events that should be hosted for coloured youth. I really enjoyed how everyone has a safe space to talk about what they’d like to see happen in the future and hopefully see those dreams fulfilled!

The Banyule Youth Summit was a fun and educational experience at the same time. I got to meet new friends and learn about others’ cultures, and what people struggle with. The people were so welcoming. We got put on a table with people that related to us. I would like to go again, and recommend it!

If you have an issue or concern that you’re passionate about, and would like to propose ideas to the local government, consider joining the next Banyule Youth Summit in 2025!
