Teaching and Learning

Young Authors’ Program

Next week our 21 students who are participating in the Ballarat Young Authors’ Program will be involved in their first workshop day.  This event is the first of three workshop days and will take place at the Sebastopol Library and Community Hub, as well as the Sebastopol RSL Hall.

Students will have opportunities to engage with local authors as well as interact with like-minded peers from other schools within the Ballarat area.

We look forward to sharing the students’ experiences of the workshop and hopefully some of their writing in a future newsletter.

Bulldogs Read Program

The Bulldogs Read students had an opportunity in the last week of Term 2 to participate in a Q&A session via Zoom with some Bulldogs AFLW players.  The three players were Ellie Blackburn (#2), Kirsty Lamb (#27) and Deanna Berry (#7).

The students had an opportunity to ask questions not only about football, but also regarding the players’ book recommendations from when they were younger.  It was a terrific opportunity for the students and we thank the players for their generosity in taking the time to spend with our students.

The next event coming up for the Bulldogs Read students is an opportunity to attend an AFL game at Mars Stadium in Ballarat on Saturday, 29th July when the Bulldogs take on Greater Western Sydney (GWS Giants), which should be a very entertaining game that many of the students and their families are looking forward to.

Planning Days

In the second last week of last term, all classroom and specialist teachers had the opportunity to participate in a planning day with their colleagues to plan for student learning for this term.  On these days, teachers examine and reflect on academic data from the most recent assessments of their students, as well as wellbeing data.

These days are very well utilised and provide an excellent opportunity for teachers to effectively plan for teaching and learning based on current student needs.  Teachers have lots of opportunity throughout these days to analyse and reflect, which greatly assists them to support and extend the students in their care.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Well done to all students who have commenced the Premier’s Reading Challenge.  We have a number of students who have completed, or are well on their way to completing the list of recommended reading, and we also have many students who have submitted book reviews- well done!

Please take some time to register your child/ren for this event over the school holiday break if you haven’t already done so.  Log in details can be found in each student’s home reading log or student diary.

Keep the reviews coming in and don’t forget to log in and have a read of the recommendations to help you choose your next book.

We will provide an update in next week’s newsletter of students who have completed the challenge throughout the holiday period.
