Year 7 Boys Badminton

On Thursday the 8th of June, the Year 7 boys badminton team competed at the Monash division sports. Although they had limited time to get their teams together and train, they proved themselves to be a formidable team, with both A and B teams taking home the wins in their groupings. The players drew the attention of the other schools for their prowess during their matches. All players and coaches displayed excellent sportsmanship and leadership throughout the day!

A huge congratulations to Jordan (7B1), Aiden (7G1), Andy (7E2), Richie (7R1), Lucas (7B1), Thomas (7B1), Harold (7E2), Antonio (7B1), and Brandon (7E1), as well as the student coaches Gia (10B3), Mingxin (10E1), and Lisa (9E2) for all their hard work leading up to the competition and on the day.

Year 7 Girls Badminton

Last week on the 8th of June Year 7 Badminton girls A and B team competed at the Monash University Badminton courts. We versed two other schools which were Wellington Secondary College and Wheelers Hill Secondary College. All the of the girls played really well throughout their singles and their teamwork during their doubles was amazing.

Our A team was versing the Wheelers Hill A team, this was an incredible match since our team won all our matches, leaving the final score to be 6-0. While that match was going on our B team was versing the Wellington A team. All the matches against them were very close and left the score at 3-3 meaning it came down to points. Unfortunately, the points added up to 73-78 meaning we had lost that match by five points. No matter the result the girls should be very proud of their efforts especially as they were going against an A team.

The next round we had Brentwood A versing Brentwood B, the girls took this as a friendly opportunity but still gave it their all. The score ended up being 5-1, giving the win to the A team.

For the third round both teams were separated again and our A team was versing the Wellington A team and our B team was versing the Wheelers Hill A team. This round was incredible, leaving our A team with the scores of 5-1 and our B team with the scores of 6-0, meaning both teams won.

During the times when the girls weren’t playing matches, they took the opportunity to keep playing on any free court and played friendly matches with their team and other schools. The last matches played were in the Grand Final, Brentwood A and Wellington A faced off for 1st and 2nd place. Their match ended with an equal number of games (3-3) won but the points didn’t disappoint leaving them at 65-77 giving the Wellington A team the 1st place spot. The B team were playing Wheelers Hill A team for 3rd and 4th place. Their match score was 5-1 giving our B team the win. The final ladder was Wellington A in 1st place, Brentwood A in 2nd place, Brentwood B in 3rd place and Wheelers Hill A in 4th place. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the next round but either way all the girls should be extremely proud of themselves!

Thank you to our student coaches Milla Grierson and Mishka Chaudhry for coaching our team on the day, running training sessions and highlighting the day with this newsletter article.

Two girl’s teams competed at the Springers Leisure Centre on Thursday 8th June, coached by Maddison Vallance-Megavin and Julia Hipwell. The sportsmanship demonstrated by the players was fantastic, they put their heart and soul into each game and represented Brentwood as amazing role models. The A team came third, with a loss to Wheelers Hill and eventual winners South Oakleigh. The B team convincingly beat their opponents by over 20 points in all three games (Wheeler Hill, Wellington and South Oakleigh). Congratulations to both teams for a great day out and a huge thank you to the students who played on the day, 17 students were chosen from over 50 students who trialed for a position on the team.

Senior Badminton

The Brentwood Senior Badminton students attended the Monash Division regionals on the 30th of May. The two teams that attended the event are as of the following:

A team: Tng Hin Istvan Ng, Hwani Shin, Ken Yamanaka, Farhan Abu Bakkar Sithick, Jared Loo, Jarrod Si

B team: John Choi, Rohan Edirisuriya, Simon Kim, Truong Lam, Samuel Lee, Andy Xu

Student coaches: Samantha Lee and Lulu Yao

Both teams played against John Monash Secondary School, Wellington Secondary College, Wheelers Hill Secondary College and South Oakleigh Secondary College

Despite some good matches, team B unfortunately came second overall in the event. However, team A played some fantastic matches and I quote from one of the South Oakleigh Secondary College students watching the games,

“What is this…the Olympics?”

which speak to the high calibre of play that the Brentwood Secondary College students and other schools have produced at the event. The A team were able to dominate the competition, only dropping a single set throughout the day and thus winning out the event. Please congratulate them if you see them, and cheer them on for the Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals on the 14th of July!

EMR Cross Country

In wet, cold and windy conditions our school cross country team competed at the Eastern Metropolitan Region (EMR) Cross Country event at Yarra Glen Racecourse on Tuesday the 13th of June. After an early morning and long bus trip, all of our students competed extremely well in the challenging conditions and against extremely strong competition. Many students broke their personal bests and many went very close to qualifying for the state finals, reserved for the top 12 competitors in each age group.

In the team events we had several age group teams that placed very highly, narrowly missing out on a spot on the podium. One team however, consisting of Cassie Weir, Michiko Versluis and Christina Theoharis, placed second in the 16 years girls event. Well done girls! (see photo below).

In the individual competition we had four students qualify for the state finals curtesy of their results. These include:

  • Cassie Weir - 7th in the 16 years girls
  • Thomas Jackson - 8th in the 16 years boys
  • Michiko Versluis - 12th in the 16 years girls
  • Jordan Gilbert - 12th in the 17-20 years boy

These students will now compete at the state finals on Thursday the 13th of July. Best of luck everyone!

And finally thank you to the parents who came and supported their children and to the staff who helped run the day.
