Around The College

Congratulations Blake Purvis

Last weekend I attended Round 3 of the Australian Kart Championship in New South Wales.

In the huge field of 60 karts, I managed to qualify 10th fastest, slightly disappointing compared to my previous 4th and 5th at rounds one and two.  After some good heat race results finishing 7th, 4th, 7th and 5th, I started the final from 9th position.  The final was a long 16 lap race where I climbed up the order to grab 3rd place on the last lap.

This is my first Australian Kart Championship podium. Hopefully there will be many more. It felt great to finally be able to spray everyone with champagne.

Year 10 Café Culture

Recently twenty Café Culture students from our two classes attended a barista course at Holmesglen TAFE. Brentwood baristas were engaged in their learning making a range of hot drinks. By the end of the day, they had mastered the short black, long black, cappuccino, latte, mocha, and delicious hot chocolates.  Students learnt many tricks of the trade. The certificate is a great advantage to have on their resumes. Some students are now inspired to find part time jobs as baristas. Great work!

Year 12 Formal

On Friday June 2nd, 212 students and twenty-four staff attended the Year 12 Formal at Karralyka Centre in Ringwood. Everyone looked fabulous. There was a three-course meal served, strawberry mocktail on arrival, awards to be won and lots of dancing and photo taking with a professional photographer and photo booth.

It was a great opportunity for the Year 12s to celebrate together and a great night was had by all.

Term 2 Community Day

This term’s community day saw an amazing display of student leadership, collaboration and organisation skills. Each term the SRC team together with the student leadership team, plan, organise, and run a Community day. The aim of Community Day is to bring us together as a whole school community to recognise, acknowledge and celebrate important social events and issues and participate in associated activities.

Our theme for this Term 2’s Community Day is Our Planet, Our Home. It has been 51 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, widely seen as the first international meeting on the environment. The 1972 Stockholm Conference spurred the formation of environment ministries and agencies around the world and kickstarted a host of new global agreements to collectively protect the environment. There is only one earth and together we can protect it.

This Term, our Community Day was held on Tuesday 13th June. During this day, for a $2 donation, students wear able to wear football colour free-dress. The money raised from our casual dress day, will be going towards the ‘Light up Timor’, a project to solve energy poverty by providing students in Timor solar lights, so that they can study during nights as there is no provision to do so otherwise.

During Lunchtime, the Green Team in collaboration with the SRC, hosted a range of activities in the gymnasium and basketball courts, including:

  • Karaoke
  • Save the rubber ducks
  • Trivia and spray the teachers
  • Pin the apple on the tree
  • Bowling
  • Touch the plant and guess
  • A book swap stall
  • Mystery Boxes
  • Rapid flashcards
  • Basketball tournament
  • House litter challenge

Director of Student Leadership

On Tuesday the 13th of June, Brentwood students embraced their differences and united to celebrate Term 2’s community day. Dressed in colorful representations of their respective footy teams, students were presented with countless opportunities to participate in fun stalls and activities. Together with the Green Team, the Student Leadership Team hosted a wonderful day for students to have some fun during the busy winter at Brentwood.

Students and staff raised awareness for Environmental Week with a sustainability-themed day to remember. Last week, the world celebrated Environmental Week, shedding light on many achievements and weaknesses in the world’s environmentalism. Moreover, with the support of the Student Leadership Team, the day was only enhanced to suit students’ diverse interests and needs. Stalls linking to the themes ranged from sporty to brainy and everything in between, presenting opportunities such as a quiz stall, a bean bag toss, a book swap stall and so much more.

Students who donated on the day funded a wonderful campaign set up by Brentwood itself. The “Light up Timor” campaign touched the hearts of many, supporting those in Timor who struggle to study at night due to the energy poverty they find themselves in. To elaborate, the school utilized any donations to purchase solar-powered lights that can be sent to Timor to facilitate the education everyone deserves. Overall, the day was a success in the eyes of many. Next term's community day will be here before we know it, and I simply cannot wait.

Year 8 SRC

The Sport Captains ran a 5X5 Half-Court Basketball Tournament open to all students to increase student participation in Community Day activities as well as engagement in Sport.  After much preparation and planning, we had a great turnout from all year levels, far greater than we had anticipated, and were able to run multiples games for all four court (Year 7s, Year 8s, Years 9s and Years 10/11) to ensure everyone who came was able to join in.

From a Sport Captain point of view it was great to see so many people coming down with their friends for a bit of fun and friendly competition or even just coming to watch and support their friends. The atmosphere at the basketball courts was one to be experienced, making for a great competitive but also supportive and inclusive environment.

Massive congratulations to all of our winners on the day and we look forward to hosting more of these events soon so stayed tuned for more announcements. We hope that you all had a lot of fun and would like to thank everyone who participated as well as everyone who helped make it possible.
