Year 9/10

Mr Williams and Ms Fisher

It has been a busy, but exciting start to Term 3 for Year 10 students, who have been focussing on their future pathways. This year for the first time CESC facilitated course selection ‘Round Robin’ days, where all Year 10 students selected to attended sessions to inform them about the range of subjects and courses that they are able to select for year 11. Each session was run by expert teachers and gave the student great insight into their options and to ask questions of the teachers about teaching and learning in VCE/VCE VM. A highlight of the day was hearing from CESC alumni who shared their journey through school into their current career and study.

We would like to commend the students for their dedication and commitment to the course counselling process and hope they are looking forward to their senior pathway in 2024.

We are thrilled to announce the results of 2023 Year 7-9 Chinese Reading Award (initial round on 20th July)

Year 9:

On Friday 28th July, Chenuli Rasnake Rallage (Year 7), Inuka Nissanka (Year 8), Urooj Farooq and Jiranya (Bitong) Sornjai (Year 9) were selected to represent Cranbourne East Secondary College at a State-wide Chinese Reading competition. The competition was organised by the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of Victoria (CLTAV) at the Copland Theatre in the University of Melbourne. They competed with about 120 contestants from 30 different schools all around Victoria, some even as far as Geelong! They delivered an exceptional performance, and their enthusiastic approach to embracing challenges and giving their best deserves applause!

Thank you to everyone involved, from our student helpers to the judges (Ms Sun, Ms Cao and Ms Liu) for making this event a tremendous success. Together, we celebrate the joy of learning Mandarin.

Virtual VYLC Program

The Victorian Young Leaders to China Program (VYLC) is a yearly opportunity for Victorian students to not only improve their Mandarin, but also immerse themselves in Chinese culture. This year program was held virtually over a two-week period in conjunction with the Beijing Language and Culture University.

Congratulations to the students who participated in this program:

Anne Edwards, Samip ADIGA, Elise Quek, Masooma Raza, Richard SLAVIK, Alan Dong, Bo Yu (Maximillian) SZE, Cheng Xi Ryan (Ryan) SZE, Elisa Brown, Jiranya (Bitong) SORNJAI, Nayan Santhosh Nair

The students attended the virtual program with their Chinese teacher every morning for a two-week period. The program involved Chinese language classes, Chinese culture classes and self-study/tutorials, as well as opening and closing ceremonies.

The students did an absolutely amazing job, and we are extremely proud of them.

Read about some of the students’ experiences in their own words:

The Victorian Young Leaders to China program was a fun experience to socialise with other students eager to learn Mandarin. I learnt how to pronounce words a bit more fluently and to say specific words that I haven't learned to revise.

Nayan SANTHOSH NAIR (9C)

I have really enjoyed the Victorian Young Leaders program and learning all this new knowledge on Chinese culture and language. My favourite part of the program was being able to read and learn with others of the same Chinese language skill, within the 2 weeks I have been able to learn a lot and I have really enjoyed it.

Ryan Sze (9K).

Congratulations to our Year 9/10 Intermediate Girls and Boys basketball who remain undefeated and are through to division!

We held our year 9 celebration assembly which highlighted the achievements of the Year 9 cohort including celebrating Attendance, Hands on Learning, HG teacher nominations and RGAR point awards.

Connectedness and Engagement - Middle Years: Angie Spalding:

We currently have two groups of Year 9 Connect for Success (C4S) to help our students apply emotional literacy to their mainstream classes and help them feel connected to school. Last week we used the Woodfire Pizza Oven to bake our own pizzas that we prepared with fresh herbs from the veggie garden. They are working towards planning a lunch party where we will acknowledge the people at our school that make us feel Empowered. The C4S program is a double period per week with the first hour focusing on Emotional literacy and the second hour something creative. In the past we’ve used clay, made poster displays, made sausage rolls and burgers and have made creative things with the Hands on Learning team in the Shed. The students are really enjoying it and say it’s their reason for getting out of bed on a Thursday.

Soon we will have an Art Therapy program to launch with a small group of students. Catriona Nobel from the Hands on Learning Team and Hannah Coburn from our Wellbeing department are completing a course which will enable them to facilitate this program. Catriona has run a practice session with a group of staff and it was a fantastic way to unwind and process our thoughts and feelings from the day.

This term we have started a new targeted intervention for 16 students called Girlosophy which is facilitated by Kate from The Human Development Workshop. With the Year Level Leaders, I selected 4 students from years 8, 9 and 10 who would benefit from having the opportunity of developing ‘the best version of themselves’. As the weeks have gone on, there’s been a great increase in confidence in the group and I’m sure this is something that they can be taking back to their mainstream learning. At the end of this 8 week program, the girls will develop a lesson of their own to deliver to a class of year 7s. I’m really excited to see their continued development in this program.
