Secondary Year 11

Term 2 Highlights

SJS is all about helping hands.  We have enjoyed helping out with year 12 programs like the Canteen making toasted sandwiches and packing the chicken nuggets and dim sims for lunch orders. Learning to use the cash register at the Mother’s Day stall and helping students to make purchases.

Our excursion to the city helped us to learn about our community and the Aboriginal culture.  Walking along the Yarra River, seeing and learning about all the art sculptures and things we can get involved with.  Our term finished with a trip to the local Salvation Army where we met 3 ladies who helped us to learn about giving back to the community.  We learnt recycling our clothes, toys, books and homewares to the Salvation Army it helps out other people in the community.

Within the classroom students have been hard at work writing their own narrative that is based on a picture they choose.”  SJS class reflection.

“I would say my narrative is the highlight of the term because it was the most fun and it is really exciting because it got my brain thinking. My narrative is about a man who gets stranded on an alien planet and is saved by a little girl who has a dark past, being kidnapped and tested on as a child. My story is called ‘The Planet’ and is the longest story out of everyone in the class. I think my story is so long because when I was planning out my story I had a rough draft and a planner that I stuck to.”  Zac

“My highlight of this term was the City camp. The City camp was really fun, I really enjoyed doing all the activities that we had planned to do. My favourite part of camp was doing the Amazing Race, I enjoyed it because I liked walking around the city and looking at all the buildings and looking at all the things that you normally would not see every day. It was the best camp that I have ever been on.”  Josh B

“My highlight of Term 2 was going to Kitchen Operations for my VET program because I have been taught how to use a knife and what kind of cuts we need to do in the kitchen.  We also learnt what colour chopping boards to use for different ingredients. I loved making different types of food at kitchen operations and working out what ingredients we needed. We made blueberry muffins, egg benedict and fruit salad and Christmas pudding. Which I had fun doing.”  Will

“My highlight of term 2 was doing Extreme Teams. This term in Extreme Teams we had to do challenges with all 6 teams.  We had to do a photo challenge where we took photos around the whole school.  We all enjoyed it and when we had to present it we found that we won the challenge and got the session cup.”  Josh O

“Doyle from Headspace came into our classroom to talk to us about what Headspace does.  What I liked was that he gave us bags of souvenirs. He also talked to us about where it is and what they do. The thing that stuck out to me the most was that you go whenever you like even without a booking.”  Anthony

“I liked when I played Basketball with the police, it was a draw. One of the police officers was being funny to make me laugh because they are trickers. They were trickers because they are joking and one of the police officers gave me a hug.  Half of the kids went on the police officer’s team and half of the police officers went on Concord’s team. We had lollies for our winning surprise and the police officers are very nice. I loved it and enjoyed it.”  Lakishia

“On Wednesday’s myself and other students go to NCAT to learn about makeup and other things like retail. I had never applied makeup on myself or anyone else before and I always ask for assistance, like how to blend eye shadow and what all the brushes are used for. I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks on socialising, I’m not much of a social butterfly but I am improving. I’m learning so much and loving every moment of it.”  Tenesha R

“We had Courtney this term to teach my class body image, such as expressing ourselves and showing that we don’t have to worry what we look like or what people say about us. I love that she lets us express ourselves by drawing on paper, last week we did a self-portrait of ourselves.”  Jessica
