GOSPEL READING

Ascension of Jesus

Mark 16:15-20 - Jesus is taken to heaven, and the disciples go forth to preach as Jesus commanded.

This Sunday the Catholic Church celebrates the Ascension of our Lord. Jesus was taken to heaven on the fortieth day after Easter.

The Gospel from St. Mark, reports the discovery of the empty tomb. The Gospel verse mentions that the women were so frightened by what they had seen at the tomb that they told no one.

Only the Gospel of Mark notes that Jesus ascended to sit at the right hand of God. In noting this, Mark teaches that Jesus’ ascension affirms the glory Jesus received from God after his death and Resurrection.

During his ministry, Jesus sent his disciples to preach, to heal, and to drive out unclean spirits. Jesus assigns his disciples the task of proclaiming the gospel message to the entire world.

The disciples were sent by Jesus to baptize and to preach.  Now they are sent out again to do more. From his place with God in heaven, Jesus helped his disciples, and he continues to help us as we try to live as his followers.Just before Jesus ascended into Heaven, he commissioned his disciples to go into all the world and to proclaim the Gospel to every creature.

The disciples did as the Lord commanded, and the Gospel tells us “the Lord worked with them.”

The challenge for us as every disciple of Jesus is to carry the Good News to all people. Pope Francis has suggested one small way to do this when he stated in The Joy of the Gospel that the greatest evangelizer is a joyful Christian.

Discussion Starters:

Are you a joyful Christian?

Do people see the gift of joy evident in your life?

Do they hear it in your words?

Pray for an increase in the gift of joy that others—including those in your own family—may be drawn to Christ through you.

GRADE 5/6 MINI VINNIES

On Friday June 11th is the Feast of the Sacred Heart. To be like Jesus and share our love with others in need we will be asking for food/toiletry donations.

Mini Vinnies will be collecting non-perishable food and toiletry items for the St Vincent de Paul Conference, Hampton Park which is based at St Kevin’s. These items will then be given to people in need within our community.

We are asking for your help! Could each student bring in a food or toiletry item?

The food item must be:

  • Non-perishable
  • Before the used by date or best before date. Please don’t bring items that are expired as these cannot be handed out to people.

Tuesday lunchtime Mini Vinnies got together and started getting the baskets ready for each House and delivered them to each Learning Space. Once again a big thank you to the Mini Vinnies. They never mind giving up their time!!

THIS YEAR WE WILL HAVE A COMPETITION BETWEEN THE HOUSES.
