LIBRARY NEWS

WHERE IS MRS MCGUIRK?
This weekend I am attending the National Education Summit - Capacity Building School Libraries. This conference first came to my attention last year and peaked my interest immediately when I read this:
The conference will focus on four major streams:
- The Power of Reading
- Building a Diverse Collection
- The Power of Evidence
- Reading is the New Black. (What a great phrase.)
I said to Mr Clery, "I really need to attend", and 12 months later here I am on my way to Brisbane with my book in hand, "All Our Shimmering Skies" by Trent Dalton. I will let you know how it goes.
Stay tuned over the next few weeks and in the coming months, as I'm sure I will have much to share with the St Nicholas School community.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
As we came to the end of Philip Bunting's book 'Give Me Some Space', Una discovered that her real 'mission', our real 'mission', is to care for our planet Earth. In response to this and linking in with World Environment Day the students have been discussing how, as a school and out into the wider community, we can care for our planet Earth. Class groups are creating posters to raise awareness of our 'mission'. These posters will be displayed around the school.

WORLDBOOK ONLINE
St Nicholas School Library subscribes to this wonderful free resource.
This resource is available for use at home FREE of charge. An information note has been sent home with the eldest in the family - please ask your child about this.
SORA
Download the free App to access this online reading resource provided for us by the Catholic Schools Office through our Oliver Library Program. The App will ask you for your school - simply keep typing in ACEN which is the group we are connected to and you will eventually get in and be able to access thousands of books for yourself and your children.
NSW PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
More and more students are nearing the completion of the Challenge. As this happens an astronaut featuring their name will appear on the "trees". You may well ask why an astronaut? Ask your child, they know why.
LIBRARY BAGS
Teach Resilience and Responsibility
Remind your child what day their library visit occurs then give them the responsibility of bringing the library bag to school on that day. If they miss that day explain to them, as I do, that they may bring it the following day.
We will always find time for a student to borrow.
Thankyou for assisting your child in presenting with a library bag to begin the year.
Students in Year 5 and 6 may purchase a bag from the library for $1.
LIBRARY BAGS MATTER .... Not just some of the time but all of the time.
No food or drink on my books.
Food and drink is for the chooks.
Library bags keep ‘em clean.
Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.
Bring your bag everytime.
Fill it up and get in line.
Have it scanned and scoot on out.
