LOTE - Term 2, 2021

 

This term, students will continue to develop their language skills and cultural understanding through inquiry units and the exploration of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival.

 

PREP

Learning Intention: To understand how to talk about family members in Mandarin.

Students will learn how to talk about family members in Mandarin and make connections with the previous unit of work on numbers. They will engage in various immersion activities such as games, stories and topic-related songs. Students will also continue to build their understanding of traditional Chinese festivals.

 

Year 1

Learning Intention: To understand how to talk about pets in Mandarin.

Students will explore Chinese words for pets and make connections with their prior learning. They will be introduced to common pets in Australia and China and learn how to talk about pets with others. Students will also engage in a Chinese cultural experience through the exploration of the Dragon Boat Festival.

 

YEAR 2

Learning Intention: To understand describing words for fruits in Mandarin.

Students will build on their prior knowledge to learn about how to use describing words to talk about different types of fruits in Mandarin. They will continue to develop their Chinese communication skills through a range of learning experiences such as role play, stories and quizzes. Students will also further develop their understanding of traditional Chinese festivals.

 

YEAR 3

Learning Intention: To understand different types of furniture in Mandarin.

In Mandarin, students will learn about words and sentences related to furniture used in everyday life and study basic sentence structure. Traditional Chinese symbols for furniture will also be introduced. The study of Pinyin and Chinese everyday language will be ongoing.

 

Year 4

Learning Intention: To understand the language of directions in Mandarin.  

Students will explore vocabulary and sentences related to direction at an advanced level. They will participate in the celebration of the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival.  Students will also reinforce their knowledge of stroke order and improve their Chinese handwriting.

 

Year 5

Learning Intention: To understand how to write a letter in Chinese.

Students will learn how to write a letter in Chinese. They will explore the difference between Chinese letters and English letters, and identify the correct format for a Chinese letter. Students will use familiar vocabulary and sentences to write a letter in Chinese. They will also be introduced to Chinese punctuation and be able to identify the related features. 

 

Year 6

Learning Intention: To understand how to use the language of shopping in Mandarin.

This study will cover the vocabulary and sentences needed for students to describe and give information about shopping and explore the features of Chinese Yuan (Currency). Students will have an opportunity to create a role play in a group to increase their fluency of speaking skills in Chinese. They will also continue to apply the Chinese keyboard to create digital texts with complex sentences in Chinese Pinyin and characters.
